Debating Looks Ahead

25th October 2005

The University of Southampton’s Debating Society is looking ahead to an exciting 2005/2006 academic year. Last year was a tremendous success for the society, with weekly debates on a wide range of subjects with many getting involved, guest speaker events, and a radio show on Surge. Outside Southampton, our debating teams reached the finals at competitions around the UK and Europe.

The Debating Society is a friendly one. Our own coach can teach the basics of debating to newcomers and for those who have debated before our experienced members can help you improve. Everyone is welcome at all our events regardless of experience and you will never be pressured into speaking. On top of the friendly approachable nature of our sociaety, all our events are free!

So, why debate? To learn how to get served after last orders or persuade your bank manager to give you a bigger overdraft. To gain the ability to speak confidently in public (great for seminars and the CV) To meet some of Southampton’s most interesting and intelligent students and to argue with them. To go on great socials. To get subsidised travel around the UK and Europe going to other universities to debate (and party) with them. To get involved in organising our own competition in March (a massive debating weekend, with plenty of food, drink and prizes thrown in.) How many reasons do you need?!

Our events are held every Thursday night, and already planned is an interesting mix of debates, socials, training sessions and guest speakers. Most weekends Southampton sends teams to compete in inter-university competitions around the UK.

If you would like to get involved with the Debating Society simply come along to one of our events. There’s no need to register in advance - just turn up on the day.

For more information visit our website at www.soton.ac.uk/~debating, drop us an e-mail on debating@soton.ac.uk, have a chat to us at the Bunfight or keep your eyes open for our posters around campus.

We’re looking forward to welcoming you to a free, friendly and interesting event very soon!
