As the chilly British winter draws in the Southampton rain dampens our tempers, and since no one wants to step in a puddle with a ballet pump on, boots are a necessity!  Boots this year are big, buckled and round-toed; and with such a variety to choose from, and Office down the road, girls how can you resist?

First and foremost we have the shooboot a la Mischa Barton. These look very ‘now’ teamed with a mini-dress or a pair of skinnies. Office have got a great suede pair in several colours for £74.99, but for a cheaper option (since the loan is probably running a little thin by now), your overdraft could stretch to New Look’s versions in blue, black and grey at £30.00. Just avoid losing your heel with these as I did, courtesy af a Jester’s drain.

Next the ever-versatile flat pixie boot, still a hot favourite around campus, and just perfect for a morning trip to a leccy pulled over a pair of jeans or woolly tights. Office have got a vast and fantastic range in at the moment from short ankle boots (from £25), to knee high (from £30), to slouch pixies (from £64.99). Over-the-knee boots are still available on the high-street if you fancy something a little different.

For a more dressed-up look the high-heeled knee-length or calf-length boot are still key this season, but choose a round rather than a pointy toe to make your feet look tiny: an added bonus.

Fatter heels rather than stilettos look effortlessly classy and give you that much needed balance on an alcohol fuelled night out. Lace-up detail is making a come back as well as military style big buckles and straps. Patent is still ever-present if you think you can pull it off.

Although not strictly ‘in fashion’ the Ugg is illustrating admirable longevity on British soil. The Aussie’s certainly did us a favour by introducing them to us two years ago; women all over the country haven’t parted with them since. For the genuine article, which really are the best, made from the warmest and most luxurious sheepskin, then log onto www.uggbootsrus.com and buy direct from Australia, or alternatively get on the phone to a distant relative down-under and get them to ship a pair or two over even cheaper. And for a cosier feel just pull on a pair of knee-high thick socks over your jeans to wear beneath your Uggs.

Tights and leggings look great under any pair of boots and when it turns really chilly then thick socks or leg-warmers turned over the tops of ankle boots were definitely a key look at London Fashion Week this year.

In fact, boots of all shapes and sizes and all fabrics and cuts are the real key to looking hot in the cold British winter. And what better way to cheer you up for the long winter months ahead than a brand new and totally fabulous pair of boots?
