Here’s everything you need to know about the Democracy and Creative Industries Zone.

DCIIn the Democracy and Creative Industries Zone, we have eight roles:

  2. Student Groups Officer
  3. Performing Arts Officer
  4. Surge Radio Station Manager
  5. SUSUtv Station Manager
  6. Editor of The Edge
  7. Wessex Scene Editor
  8. Union Films Cinema Manager

1. VP Democracy and Creative Industries

The Vice-President Democracy and Creative Industries leads the Union council, Elections and the Constitution. They also support all of the  the creative industries at SUSU, including SUSU Media (Wessex Scene, SUSUtv, Surge and The Edge), Performing Arts and Union Films. They act as Editor-in-Chief for the two print publications. VP DCI also oversees the officers in the DCI zone, making sure everything runs smoothly. Lastly, they manage the affiliation of student groups and societies,  making sure that they are supported.

How has this position changed, if at all?

The position of VP Democracy & Creative Industries was originally called VP  Communications (and before that, VP Media & Communications), which was focused around dealing with communication, organising the media departments and overseeing democracy. Now, the role also includes looking after SUSU-affiliated Student Groups, which previously fell under the role of VP Engagement (now only overseeing entrepreneurial and volunteering groups).

2. Student Groups Officer

The Student Groups Officer represents the societies of SUSU and works with others to make sure everything runs smoothly, supporting in both the short term and the long term, organising budgets, elections and  advertising.

How has this position changed, if at all?

This position used to be called Societies Officer, and has since evolved from that position to include all Student Groups,chairing the Student Groups committee which covers all zones of SUSU. The position was also moved to the DCI zone because both the DCI zone and the Student Groups Officer organise constitutional issues and elections, and focus on  principles and procedures.

3. Performing Arts Officer

The PA Officer oversees the activities of the Performing Arts societies both in and outside of SUSU.

4. Surge Radio Station Manager

The Surge Station Manager oversees the input and output of Surge Radio, and coordinates members and volunteers. They are responsible for the entire content of Surge Radio.

5. SUSUtv Station Manager

SUSUtv’s Station Manager is responsible for of SUSUtv’s input and output, and its content. They also coordinate members of the committee and volunteers involved in all areas.

6. Editor of The Edge

The Editor of The Edge, Southampton University’s Entertainment Magazine, is in charge of engaging the students of SUSU by overseeing the production and distribution of the magazine and online content. They also coordinate the editorial team and writers and is responsible for all content online and in print.

7. Wessex Scene Editor

The Editor of the Wessex Scene oversees the running of the Wessex Scene and coordinates content both online and in print. They also coordinate the editorial team and the writers, overseeing the design and retaining responsibility for the magazine and online newspaper.

8. Union Films Cinema Manager

The Manager of the Union Films Cinema oversees the general running of the Union Cinema, leading  a team of volunteers, and coordinating the output and the promotion of the Cinema throughout their time as Manager.
