Sloane meets student

24th February 2007

The ‘Sloane Ranger’ look has irrefutably extended beyond the home turf of The King’s Road, becoming a national fashion trend. The iconic ‘Sloaney’ has progressed from mummy’s pearls, ruffles, and Laura Ashley towards a more fashion-conscious, savvy and frankly scruffier version of her predecessor.

The good news is you don’t need to have attended Cheltenham Ladies’ College or be a regular at the Jack Wills check-out to achieve this versatile look. OK so Portswood High Street is no Sloane Square and Jesters isn’t exactly on par with Boujěs, but the Sloane trend is still very accessible to the student; in fact it couldn’t be more perfect for the ubiquitous just-rolled-out-of-bed-for-the-nine-o’clock-look… and don’t worry, you needn’t start referring to your peers as ‘Sweetiedarls!’

The statement look encompasses some of our favourite comfort pieces including sweatpants tucked into a pair of short uggs, or alternatively a pair of white skinnies and topshop ballets. Combine one of these with a vintage or slogan T and granddad cardi, then dig out some of that ethnic jewellery you bought in some far-eastern country on the gap year during your ‘traveller/hippy’ phase.

Catwalks for spring were all about big, long, bouncy barnets. Hair is a crucial testament to all that’s Sloane, the longer, blonder, more matted the better, so get backcombing for a 70’s sidesweep or side pony. The look is achieved by simply abstaining from any description of a comb in the morning... preened is a no-go.

No Sloane outfit would be complete without the favoured pashmina, which is gradually combining with the colourful hippy scarf. This is generally wound round the neck with careless abandonment. To finish the look oversized bags are the preferred choice, but forget the pragmatism of carrying it over the shoulder, slung over the wrist in the style of Lindsay, Paris and Nicole is the ‘Sloaney’ way dahling!!
