January is notoriously the month that is the tightest on the old purse strings. What with the vast amounts spent on Christmas presents, Christmas Eve and New Years Eve shenanigans.

Plus, who could forget the purchase of your revision guides for the January exams- yeah right! With all of these, little is left for much else!

Whilst a lucky few of you may have received stylish gifts from loved ones over the festive season, the majority of us are left with our Grandmother’s yearly knitted jumpers, which, let’s face it, won’t quite cut it in the style stakes.

"Thank God for the January sales!" I hear you cry and for those of you with budgets that won’t quite stretch to the season’s newest trends , try to seek out the hottest accessories in the sales instead!

Accessorising has always been an overlooked fashion technique, with most of us favouring to purchase the seasons key clothing pieces instead of accessories but they really can do wonders for making simple outfits on trend. As this season paid honour to the silhouette, waist belts should be on the top of your list in the sale hunt. Waist belts add sexy structure to any outfit and I’m sure that we will all be grateful for the nipping in of those extra few inches that we have accumulated in our mince pie binge over the festive season.

Choose one in gold as a continuation of the season’s metallic trend. Whilst Topshop do some particularly fashionable versions, they can come in quite pricey, even in the sales (£15-25). H&M do some more budget friendly versions that come in a variety of colours. Check out the real leather one in this season's deep purple (£9.99).

Jewellery is a fantastic way of funking up an outfit, and this season the rule ‘the bigger the better’ definitely applies!!

However, steer clear of dainty diamond bling and opt instead for chunky bangles in wood and gold for a look that is more trendy then tribal. In the sales, Primark’s cheaper than cheap prices have been reduced further, meaning you can pick up some funky bangles for less than £1!

Hunt out the funky faux snakeskin gold and brown bracelets also, priced at around (£1.50) and stack them right up your arms to jingle jangle the night away. Oversized rings are great eye catching pieces and whether you choose massive dazzling jewels or simple metal designs you’ll definitely be making a statement about you diva status! Check out the extensive range at Accessorize.

Finally, every girls favourite word, shoes! Sale shoe shopping always offers a calm and welcome relief from the sifting through of racks upon racks of messy clothes rails, as shoe shops such as Faith and Dune excel in the sales periods.

Stay one step ahead of the other bargain shoppers, and instead of frantically looking for another pair of boots that will offer you limited wear between now and spring, do the unthinkable and hunt for summer footwear!!

Shoe shops are renowned for trying to flog last seasons footwear at discount prices, so beat them at their own game, by choosing styles that are destined to remain fashionable for summer 2008. Wedges, in particular are set to continue last summer’s trend, as are metallic Grecian flip flops that we all love and that will never date!
