No doubt many of you spent December 31st at some kind of house party or celebration, drinking in the new year with aplomb.

However, how many of you stopped to think about the fallibility of the georgian calendar, the flexibility of cultural festivals and the accuracy of time measurements. Not many of you I’d wager. Well, I did and I’ve gone to the trouble of producing this list of other new years. celebrations that occur throughout the year.

While celebrating the new year at the beginning of January is incredibly popular, why not buck the trend and celebrate some of the other new years? It’s the perfect excuse for another few massive benders!

Jan 1st – Georgian Calendar

Jan 9th – Muharram (Muslim New Year)

Jan 14th – Julian Calendar

Feb 7th – Chinese New Year

Feb 8th – Losar (Tibetan New Year)

March 14th – Hola Mohalla (Sikh New Year)

March 20th – Iranian New Year, Zoroastrian New Year, Thelemic New Year

March 30th – Saka Calendar

April 1st – Assyrian New Year

April 6th – Bikrami Samvat (Hindu New Year)

April 7th – Ugadi (Telugu and Kannadika New Year)

April 14th – Baisakhi (Punjabi New Year), Poila Baisakh (Bengali New Year)

September 11th – Coptic Orthodox New Year

December 29th – Muharram (Not a typo, there’s two Muslim New Years in 2008!)
