It’s recently been revealed that students graduate with an average of £17,500 of debt. With the credit crunch hitting national headlines, there’s never been a better time to think about your finances...
It’s easy to forget that the internet is a great source of deals and discounts for students. For example, log on to www.studentfreestuff.com or www.studentbeans.com for the best selection. From takeaways to cinemas, as well as local clubs, you’ll definately find an offer to suit you.
Remember that a generous number of students in Southampton are entitled to a Government grant. The University also offers scholarships to certain students based on academic achievements. Just make sure that you don’t blow it all during Freshers’ week! Check out soton.ac.uk/study/feesandfunding for details, make sure you’re not missing out.
If money’s really tight, then it’s worth considering getting a part-time job. Not only will it top up your bank balance, but it can look great on your CV. To make sure you find work that suits you, why not pay a visit to the Careers Centre, which can be found next to Hartley library. Or check out www.soton.ac.uk/jobs to find part-time work on offer at University. But be careful about taking on too much!
If you want to put your studies first and don’t want a regular job, sign up to www.studentgems.com. Simply create a profile by filling in your skills, and employers will message you asking if you want to work for them.
It’s a myth that students have to live off pot noodles and baked beans because they’re so skint. Eating healthily doesn’t have to be pricey. Head to one of the many grocers in Portswood if you want to buy fresh and organic vegetables for cheap. Also, pay a visit to supermarkets like Waitrose at the end of the day, as they have good quality food that’s close to its sell-by-date in the reduced sections.
Another way to avoid dipping into your overdraft is selling off all that stuff collecting dust in your room. It’s worth checking out www.fashionexchange.co.uk, which has trebled in popularity over the past few months. Not only can you sell your fashion items, but you can also buy some great designer bargains.
Some useful advice comes from Megan, a third-year English student: “ Make sure you don’t blow all your cash in the first week of term. It might be tempting to go out every night and spend loads, but you’ll regret it when everyone’s out partying at the end of term, and you have to stay in by yourself!”
However, there is one final solution to all your money worries: your parents!
