We’ll lend a friendly, listening ear for anything you want to talk about, and can also supply useful information. Nightline is run by students, for students, so we can directly relate to the kind of pressures and situations that arise from being at university; although all members of Nightline are volunteers, we’re trained to deal with any call we might receive.
Each call is treated with equal respect and consideration. We abide at all times by four central principles: all calls are kept completely confidential and anonymous, and we are non-judgemental and non-directive. This means we won’t tell anyone else about the call, or even that we took the call, and it certainly won’t be recorded. You don’t have to tell us your name or any other details, and we’ll never ask you to give them. You won’t be judged by anything you say on the phone, no matter what you talk about, and we won’t start telling you what to do, or give you advice. We’re there to help you make up your own mind if you want to make a decision about anything.
A common misconception is that Nightline deals only with calls of a suicidal nature, but that is not the case. We will listen to any issue that’s bothering you, whether it’s accommodation, exams, relationships - or that you’ve just had a rubbish day and fancy getting it off your chest. That’s not all though – we can also provide information on a wide range of services, from pizza and taxi numbers to 24hr pharmacies, emergency dentists and telephone numbers of halls. We can act as a gateway to information about university matters, including accommodation, finances and health services (sexual health, drugs, alcohol etc), and others too. We might not be able to provide exactly what you need, but chances are we can put you in touch with somebody who can.
Remember, loneliness, isolation and the feeling of having nowhere to turn are common during university. Nightline is somewhere to turn to that’s confidential and accepting of you and your feelings. How often have you been frightened to talk to someone about something for fear of reprisal, judgement or embarrassment? Talking something through can be so helpful, and although Nightliners are not trained counsellors, this simple action can sometimes be exactly what you need. It might help you to think more clearly, formulate ideas, see a solution, or just feel that a weight has been lifted from your shoulders.
Hopefully it’s comforting to know there’s something like Nightline out there, and that you can freely talk to someone about anything! So, if you’re feeling a bit lonely, want to talk about issues such as accommodation, money, exam stress, relationships, sexuality or anything else, or you just desperately need a pizza, give Nightline a call… pop the number in your phone now.
We’re open between the hours of 8pm to 8am during term-time.
