One of the joys of travelling is testing city public transport and alternatives to jeep-driven forrays into the countryside.

Here is a selection from around the world that are commonly heralded as worth trying.

Tuk-tuk
Careering through the streets of India or South-East Asia in one of these bone jolting, knuckle whitening, teeth chattering motorised tricycles is a staple experience when travelling throughout Asia. A haggle for the price and a hop in the back seat and youfre off at breakneck speed through the streets of Bangkok or Delhi. Expect to arrive at your destination sweaty and bruised, but exhilarated.

Charter a Schooner
The Caribbean is home to many yachts available for charter and day trips. The 60ft Scaramouche and 73ft Jambalaya are two such schooners that ply the pristine, turquoise waters of the Tobago Cays and the Grenadines, stopping at idyllic scatters of tropical islands for lunch and a snorkel in the sun.

Horse Riding
Whether you try cowboy style in the Western USA and Australia, or 19th century explorer style in the Okavango Delta, Botswana, horses are a fit and fun way to experience a country. Explore the depths of the American national parks with a 10 day camping and riding trip. Or, try an African safari; horses are perfect for getting close to wildlife without scaring them off, and give you access to remote or awkward locations a vehicle cannot get to.

The Tran-Siberian Express
From Moscow to Beijing, Vladivostock, or Ulaanbaatar; and back. An epic journey on these trains can take from 5 to 7 days through the spectacular landscapes of Russia. Additional routes journey to the green plains and deserts of Mongolia and northern China, passing the Great Wall on its way. The easiest way to organise a trip is to book with a tour operator who can sort out stops at places such as Lake Baikal and Ekaterinburg on your way across this vast country.
