Old Wives Tales - Fact or Fiction?

Many "old wives tales" have been handed down over the years, and here we look at the truth:

Masturbating will make you blind
We had to include this one. Just so you know it will not cause baldness, insanity or excessive hair on the back of your hands either.

Carrots help you see in the dark
This was actually a myth spread during the Second World War to stop the Germans discovering that British pilots were using radar for excellent night vision. While carrots do contain Vitamin A which is essential for healthy eyes, sadly, torches are still a necessity.

Wet hair in cold weather will give you a cold
There is only one way to catch a cold: direct contact with the virus itself. By the way, the advice to ‘feed a fever, starve a cold’ is fiction too. It is vital to stay well hydrated in both cases and to eat enough to satisfy your appetite, but not to overindulge.

Eating before swimming will cause cramp
This is not true, according to the Red Cross, eating will not increase the risk of cramps. They advise however that you do not eat gum or any other food while swimming.

If you eat food standing up, it is virtually fat free
I wish!

Watching too much TV will give you bad eyesight
This is untrue. Watching a lot of television or reading in dim light will make your eyes tired, but will not cause damage to the eye.

Spicy food causes stomach ulcers
Spicy foods can aggravate existing ulcers but do not cause them. Instead, they are often the result of smoking or using a lot of anti-inflammatory medicines, such as aspirin.

If you swallow chewing gum, it will stay in your system for seven years
Scientists have proven that chewing gum is definitely indigestible. However it will not stay in your digestive system but pass through as normal.
