New shows, new presenters and even its own news team have all helped the station become a favourite with listeners and sponsors alike. Matt Treacy, Station Manager, explains:
“One of the great things about being on FM is that we can reach so many more new listeners than we normally can. We are in the best possible position to serve Southampton University with news, competitions and great music because the station is run entirely by students.”
Some of the show highlights include rising star Alex Duffy whose show (which is sponsored by Subway) 10am-midday every weekday has seen a great response.
Matty, who was nominated for ‘most entertaining show’ last year in the National Student Radio Awards, broadcasts between 4-6pm Monday to Thursday, sponsored by Megabowl. With firm favourites such as the ‘Surge chart show’, plus the infamous ‘live sessions’ on top of impressive specialist music shows, it means there is something for everybody.
This year has seen one fantastic achievement after another for the station. It’s fantastic freshers’ week broadcasts, were followed by the announcement that Surge had been nominated in three categories for the National Student Radio Awards (two of which they won).
This year Surge is covering the elections better than ever before, including live debates with the candidates, the latest campaign news, and (of course) the results of the voting read out live on Surge 87.7FM as and when they happen.
This is all part of the brand new Surge news team that has already proved very successful in its coverage of the opening of the new Jubilee Sports centre.
There is also the ‘Surge credit card’ available from many places throughout the Union building).
If you keep a copy of this on your person at all times, then if a Surge prize-giver stops you, you could win some of hundreds of pounds worth of prizes. Surge has never given away so many prizes before!
