We’ve all heard the ‘festival essential’ tips before: wear wellies and pack a parka. But festival fashion is so much more than that! A festival is a chance to leave the ‘real world’ behind (even if just for the weekend!) and, with regards to your style, to try something completely new.
1. Lace and Romance
Lace at festivals looks romantic and ethereal, whatever the weather! Florence Welch is the ultimate romantic icon when it comes to the festival look. Teaming floaty dresses with wellies is perfectly okay! If you’re not into lace dresses, try a lace or crochet kimono to team with ripped denim shorts as a cute evening cover up.
2. Hair and Makeup
Plaits are your new best friend! Plaited updos look very cute and keep your hair out of your face while you’re busy getting to the front of the crowd! Long loose plaits like Vanessa Hudgens’ at Coachella 2014 are practical and pretty. If you’re unsure about making drastic changes to your hair, hair chalks are a good solution as they give you a new look instantly! They are easy (if a little messy!) to apply and wash out quickly. Another way to change your look is to try bright or unusual eye makeup; check out Pixie Lott’s floral design.
Denim shorts are a must have festival item, as proven by festival style icon Alexa Chung. Team them with tights if it gets cold or wet, and a crop top if it’s sunny! A denim jacket is a useful cover up if the sunny days turn into chilly nights.
The best festival fashion looks are often achieved by simply layering mismatching garments together. Try a printed fringed kimono with high-waisted shorts or a floral dress with a tough chunky biker jacket. Layering also gives you the freedom to mix and match different garments so you can create many different looks with a small number of garments. Packing light is something you will be grateful for when you are lugging your belongings across a dusty/muddy/crowded field!
5. Anything Goes
The beauty of festival fashion? There are no rules! Obviously you will need to keep practical considerations (like the weather!) in mind but if you want to experiment and try something completely different from your day to day wardrobe, then a festival is the perfect opportunity to do so!
If you’re looking for some inspiration for your festival wardrobe this summer, have a look at some of my favourite looks from California’s most stylish festival, Coachella.
I love this colourful two piece! This stylish festival goer contrasts the bright colours of her co-ordinating set with black accessories for a unique and chic look.
This year at Coachella, a lot of revellers mixed crochet and lace crop tops with ripped denim shorts. It’s a timeless look! Have a look in vintage or charity shops near you for cute crochet tops.
