Cube Carnage

A bouncer was left with a fractured skull and several students were badly injured after a fight broke out in the Cube nightclub at the end of last term.

Just before the University closed for the Easter vacation the Asian Cultural Society held a celebratory event at the Students’ Union, which turned into a violent punch-up.

The night had started peacefully, but at around 11.30pm there was an incident on the dance floor between a small group of three females and a male student and a large group of young males.

This same group of males were also responsible for the more violent fight, which broke out at approximately 2.15am, just as the venue was being closed for the night and revellers were being asked to leave the club.

CCTV footage showed a number of cars driving up to the Cube, with the passengers running into the venue. These people then joined in with the melee, although it is unknown whether the fight, and their subsequent arrival, was planned.

One student’s head was slammed into the reinforced glass doors to the left of the reception desk, causing the glass to break and leaving a pool of blood next to it. There were many other substantial injuries to students, who were treated immediately by members of the Lifesaving Club who happened to be at the Union, and at least three people went to hospital for treatment of their injuries. The security staff at the event did their best to contain the violence, but as it escalated they called the police. Several arrests were made.

The evening was a private function, intended to celebrate Asian culture. The event was an after-show party to the successful fashion show, where cultural music, clothes and comedy sketches were enjoyed by the many people who had turned up to the show.

The only categorical statement is that the organisers of this event were not in any way involved with the fight.

Southampton University Students’ Union President, Andy Wilson made the following statement regarding the incident: "There has been a thorough investigation into the incidents at the Cube on Saturday 5th March. It was a very unfortunate situation that ruined what had proven to be a very enjoyable event. I am committed to providing an environment in which ALL students can feel safe and secure, when out enjoying themselves."
