At approximately 11:15pm tonight, a power cut affected a large number of streets across the Highfield and Portswood area.
SouthernelecPD tweeted that the Southampton area had lost power at the time of the incident, and were able to get the power back on around 15 minutes later.
The blackout is said to have been caused by a fire at the main SEC substation in Western Esplanade. The blackout began in the centre of town at approximately 10:15, and spread further afield an hour later. Street lights and other public lighting were lost, and burglar alarms were trigged by the outage. Approximately 16,000 residents were affected by the event.
Southern Electric’s emergency service has stated that they hope to get all the power back on by 1am.
SUSU, which was tonight hosting the second of the Freshers’ Welcome Parties, was unaffected.
