- Update: Southampton have stormed through the first stage of University Challenge’s quarter-finals after finishing with a victorious 290 points against Queen’s University Belfast’s 90 points.
- The Southampton team will now need to play one more round in order to reach the semi-finals.
The team of four students, comprising of team captain Bob De Caux along with David Bishop, Richard Evans and Matt Loxham, originally lost in the first round with 155 points, against the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) who qualified straight to the second round with 230 points.
However, Southampton qualified as a highest-scoring loser, winning against Loughborough University with a score of 185 versus Loughborough’s 80 points which permitted them a place in the second round.
In the second round, the Southampton team achieved more success, gaining the highest score of the current series so far, an incredible 335 versus Bangor University’s 60 points.
