A 19-year-old man was robbed at a Tesco Express cashpoint and then sexually assaulted in a nearby graveyard in the early hours of yesterday.

The victim was using the device at the Tesco branch on St. Mary’s Street when he was robbed. He was then seriously sexually assaulted in the graveyard of the nearby St. Mary’s Church.

Detective Inspector Dave Jackson, heading up the investigation, told the Daily Echo:

“I would like to hear from anyone who was in the St Mary’s Street area from about 3am, who may have seen an altercation at and adjacent to the cash machine outside Tesco Express. I would also like to speak to anyone who may have seen a group of men in the churchyard between about 2.45am and 3.30am as they may have vital information.”

UPDATE: Detectives leading the investigation have made an arrest in connection with the sexual assault and mugging.

Officers have confirmed they are questioning a 42-year-old man from the city in connection with the incident.
