In Chongqing City, China, a revolutionary district to be known as Woman Town as been established. Women will make all the laws under the slogan "A woman never makes mistakes, a man can never reject a woman’s request."

The French elections began this week with 12 candidates hoping to reach the second round on May 6.  

In Brazil the governor of Rio De Janeiro has appealed to the government to send sections of the army to the city to combat the rising crime rate. Since February 653 people have been killed in the city.

In Equador, President Correas’ proposal to elect a new assembly which would sideline Congress has been met with popular support. 

23 people have been killed in a bomb attack in Algiers. The attacks included suicide bombs aimed at the Prime Minister. It is feared that the attacks may be related to the Algerian civil war, which cost an estimated 200,000 lives. 

In Moscow efforts to extradite Boris Berezovsky have been stepped up. The billionaire, who resides in Britian, had called for the overthrow of Vladimir Putin’s government in an interview with The Guardian.

Also in Moscow Boris Yeltsin died this week. Yeltsin was the first Russian leader following the break up of the USSR. 

In Washington statistics have been released showing that President Bush’s teen abstinence programme has failed. The programme is thought to have cost over $1 billion.  

In Southampton preparations for the local elections are underway. The contest is expected to be hotly contended across the country with many seeing it as a test run for Conservative leader David Cameron.
