Going for Gold

27th September 2002
Chris Tuffill

Term is nearly upon us, and Tiger (Vice President Student Activities) is out of the Country sunning himself in South Africa!  It now falls to me, Chris, your overworked, unpaid, AU Officer to welcome you back and inform you of what delights are in store for the forthcoming year.  I have never done this before so bare with me, here goes!

Well, here we go again, term starts, the bank accounts are recharged, and the outlook is good.  A year full of sporting activities to show all of the other universities just how good Southampton University really is.  Whether the competition is on the pitch or in the bar, I feel that this is going to be a good year - just how many sporting successes lie ahead of us?

Many acheivements will be remembered from last year - particularly  when we beat the Institute at football, 5-1, at the St Mary’s stadium, and then when we beat them, again, at Cricket at the Hampshire Rose Bowl.  Both were tremendous events and repeat performances are expected again this year.
Sporting activities are not the only activities being improved by the Athletic Union this year.  With a new Union, we have a new Venue for Wednesday nights.  Wicked Wednesdays are returning to the Students Union for GOLD NIGHT.  A venue that can cope with up to 1200 students, a new nightclub, 3 bars, 2am license, Cheesy Tunes and Union Bar prices we just cannot go wrong.  The item that clinched the deal for me is the thought of the Safety Bus home at 2am for only £1!  BARGAIN!!!

The Walkabout Cup on Sunday 13th October starts off our fixtures for the year, let us start off the year the way we intend to carry on by beating our local rivals the Southampton Institute.  Matches are being played at Wellington Sports Ground, and the Basketball will be taking place in the Sports Hall.

This year’s AU Colours Ball is currently being planned.  Dates are yet to be confirmed but the event will be after the Easter Vacation.  Ticket sales are commencing much earlier this year, so keep an eye out for further information on this event which will be even better than last year’s.  Anyone who fancies getting involved in the organisation of this ball should get in contact with me - I always need lots of help as there are masses of things to be done.  Don’t be shy, be part of something great.

AU Gold cards have been created for this year.  As a GOLD CARD holder you receive reduced cost entry to the GOLD NIGHT, chances to WIN £50 CASH every week.  Gold Card membership benefits your club also.  A large proportion of the money that you pay to enter the union on GOLD NIGHT will go straight back to your club!!

The first GOLD NIGHT is on Wednesday 9th October. BE THERE!!!
