The Stag displayed in the Stag’s Head pub has been reported missing by the Union.
The mounted Stag was discovered to be missing by shocked bar staff on the morning of Wednesday 13th May, whilst they prepared to open for business.
As of yet, no one is sure how the thieves managed to remove the Stag from it’s home without leaving any signs of breaking in, and there are no witnesses.
The hunting trophy was donated by a member of the University of Southampton alumnus and has been proudly mounted by the entrance of the Stag’s Head since it was refurbished.
The symbolic feature of the Stag’s head depicted not only the Union pub, but also many sports teams within the Athletic Union, serving as an integral mascot for them.
Whether it was stolen as part of an outlandish student prank or part of something more sinister, staff and students are appealing for help to recover the missing Stag. Security are currently wading through CCTV footage for clues, and everyone is doing everything they can. Alex Tanfield, SUSU President, spoke at Union Council on monday, and said: "We don’t want to know who did this, we just want the Stag back."
If you have seen anything suspicious or know anything that may help, please do not hesitate to inform University security; help bring the Stag back home.
