A stomach churning, nose wrinkling incident on the eve of Saturday the 15th gives a whole new meaning to the term ‘Foam Party’. Hundreds of clubbers were evacuated from the popular nightspot Jumpin’ Jaks at the Leisure World complex, after an overhead pipe fractured and began to spray sewage onto poor, unsuspecting people below....talk about being in the wrong place at the wrong time!

About fifty people got saturated in toilet paper, sewage and who knows what else... “It looked like a water shoot and was just gushing everywhere,” one unfortunate witness recalled. The pipe came away from a joint and hung from the ceiling. It became detached at about 10.15pm, the area was cleared immediately, and the entire club was soon evacuated. Complete chaos ensued as 750 people searched for their coats and demanded their money back. A witness tells that those prepared to queue were given refunds plus free tickets for the nearby Diva nightclub. The whole of Leisure World was shut up for the rest of the night and no-one was allowed to use the toilets.

So next time you’re preparing for a night on the town, make sure you don those waterproofs and wellies. Maybe a noseplug would come in handy too!

It may have been a smelly night for some on Saturday at Leisure World but it seems that recently a whiff in the air is not uncommon in the city of Southampton!! If any of you have noticed an unexplained, unpleasant odour of any sort then it may be that you have sniffed out Southampton’s “mystery smell”! However, reports state that the source of the stench has finally been located and eradicated. The smell was apparently likened to decaying vegetation and no, it wasn’t the pong of any of us students or even the local residents. Instead, it was due to bacteria in the water cleaning system at Ford’s Swaythling plant. So now that the air’s been cleared in Swaythling and Jumpin’ Jaks has solved its sewage problems, we can all relax in the sensuous aroma of a stench-free Southampton!
