Today is the start of the Southampton University annual Science and Engineering events. The event is comprised of two free open days, an Ocean and Earth day today and a Science and engineering day next Saturday.
The Ocean and Earth day is being held at the National Oceanography Centre, where visitors will be given the chance to learn about ocean research and will even get the opportunity to see the RRS Discovery (a research ship) preparing for its first voyage.
The Science and engineering day will include: interactive exhibitions, talks and shows. It aims to have something for everyone, with a wide range of different events on offer; from talks on evolution, to the chance to see the Railway Research laboratory in action.
Professor William Powrie, Dean of Engineering and the Environment, comments: “One of the aims of the University’s Science and Engineering Festival is to inspire interest in these fascinating subjects and demonstrate just how exciting they can be. I really hope that these events spark enthusiasm and prove influential in persuading many of the young people visiting to choose science or engineering as a career.”
