John Inverdale Meets Wessex Sport

Special guest at this year’s AU ball was sports broadcaster John Inverdale, who graduated from the University of Southampton with a degree in History.

During that time, he was captain of the tennis team and also editor for the ‘Wessex News’, a former incarnation of the Wessex Scene. He has gone on to host a variety of radio and television programmes, including part of the BBC’s coverage of Wimbledon and the Six Nations tournament.

On the night, Inverdale gave a speech that was well received by all the students in attendance. The highlight of the speech was John expressing mock surprise at the fact that cheerleading was now considered a sport at the University, though after meeting some members of the squad, he delivered an apology on stage stating he had since been convinced otherwise! WessexSport caught up with John after the awards had been handed out.

Wessex Scene: John, you were a top class athlete when you were a student here, which sports teams were you a member of?

JI: I was part of rugby, tennis, cricket, I had a great time, I really loved it. They always say that your schooldays are your happiest years, but in a way, I would say my years at Southampton were the happiest of my life.
