Their captain Charlotte Ward and two fantastic coaches Yasmin Stammer and Katie Whitlock also attended. The location’s lack of southerness meant a long and exhausting journey up to Leicester the night before and a very early start as the competition kicked-off at a bright and early 8 o’clock ensuring that the the team were suffering from a lack of sleep as well as the cold snap which had landed during the night. But tiredness and cold were no match for the team famously known as the Soton Spankolinists.
Our first competitor of the day, Ed Sinclair, had never bounced before and for some strange reason was scared that the day may damage his so called man points, but he soon changed his mind after soaring through two routines and coming first in his category by an amazing 1.9 points. He showed a remarkable level of natural ability and the team have high hopes now for his bouncing future. If only we could get him in a leotard and whites!
The second first place came at the end of the day with our Welsh girl Hannah Evans. Hannah is another bouncer who seemed unaware of just how good she was and didn’t believe she had won until the very last moment. She should have relaxed because yet again the other competitors were left flailing in her wake.
Special mention should be made of our other three competitors, Emma Sales who had also never competed for us and Jess Binnie who narrowly missed out on a qualifying place, coming in at 14th place out of 125! Abi Beasely should also have qualified in the advanced category but a last minute mistake in her second routine caused her to be knocked out of the top ten.
We are now looking forward to the BUSA finals at Surrey where both Hannah and Ed will compete along side our two elite bouncers, Katie Whitlock and Melissa Leach. If all goes well we hope to bounce away in March with four bright shiny cups and a huge grin on our faces. At the very least we won’t have to worry about it taking us four hours to get there and getting up sp early in the morning!
