What is Sport?

22nd January 2008
Simon Webb

In a special edition of Wessex Sport we are proud to bring to you a presentation that aims to discuss the question, "What is sport?".

The question will be broken down into some important sub categories and hopefully by the end you will have reached some sort of conclusion as to what sport in 2008 is with our help.

Sport is large topic. Is sport simply the particupation in activites that raise the heart rate? Does the term ‘sport’ extend to fandom? is sport only a professional activity? Is it available to all? Are chances equal?

In order to best answer the question ‘sport’ shal be disected. It is broken down for simpler digestion and aims to answer the aforementioned questions. "Women in Sport" is a brief perspective from Emily Horton on just how available and accesible sport is to women, both at school age and at University.

"The Fan" is a discussioin by Phil Webb about what it is to be a fan and what drives him to his fandom. Phil is a long serving Saints and Barnet FC fan. He has written in nearly every issue of the Wessex Scene over the last two years.

"The University" a brief outline of what sport at University is and where it is going. The contribution of University sport to our national teams and the levels of success they encounter wil be discussed.

With SUSU Elections approaching once the exam period has passed we also have a look at what makes a good Athletic Union President.

Finally "Sporting Stereotypes" is a forum in which Simon Webb attempts to dispel a few, perhaps, wrongly held opinions.

By the time the reader has finished reading this special feature we hope that you are more equipped to answer the question. Not only that but we hope that the questions and our response sparks furter debate amongst the readership. Challenge our answers. Challenge yourself to provide an alternative response.

Our response is by no means a conclusion to the discussion. Approximately two pages is no where near enough space or time to exhaustively cover the question. The different approaches to the responses are aimed at tackling each issue in a unique and interesting way.

We hope that this topic raises more questions, entertains and informs.
