Flying High With The Spitfires

1st December 2008

With five teams under the Spitfire wing, spanning over ice hockey and inline hockey, averaging around 90 players, the club is still going strong.

The University’s Ice and Inline Hockey Club have been part of the Athletic Union for 10 years. Although possibly less familiar in the student culture, the club, known as the Southampton Spitfires, definitely deserve your attention.

It hosts the highly competitive A teams, home to some of the top players on the scene. Not forgetting the club’s B teams who always keep the heat turned up in their leagues.

As far as wins go, in 2006 and more recently, in 2007 the inline A team secured a well-earned win at the British University Inline National Championships successfully defending their title. This year the tournament favourites reluctantly settled into 3rd place. The Ice A team have stayed pretty consistent in their results, coming 4th place this year at their Nationals, whilst coming 3rd the previous year – they are expecting big improvements from now on.

It’s not all about aggression, Canadians or testosterone though. There is a Social Squad (aka the Wobblies!) who train to improve or just for fun. Lots of girls are dedicated attendees and everyone is welcome, skater or not.

The SUIIHC offers many opportunities; watch action-filled matches for free, renowned socials (apologies for the Roller Disco – we had many a drink!) and all levels of coaching from our own top players. If you’re interested in giving it a go, don’t hesitate to contact Simon Gifford, Chairman.

Keep up the good work Spitfires!
