Before Easter, the University of Southampton Lifesaving Club attended the RLSS Speeds competition at Pond’s Ford Pool in Sheffield.

This annual two day event is considered to be the single most prestigious competition for Speed Lifesaving squad in the entire United Kingdom. University Lifesaving Teams have traditionally performed well at this competition, and this year was no exception for the University of Southampton.

The club’s performance exceeded that of other years with numerous top 10 and top 15 positions. The men’s relay team performed beyond expectations with all of their efforts placing them top 5 or higher. The best of these efforts secured them a third position, and a bronze medal, in the line throw relay, also obtaining them the student record (only to be broken again by the University of Southampton just weeks later).

Despite not receiving more medals for their performances, two of our member’s performances were being closely watched by members of the selection panel of the English and Scottish National Lifesaving teams. As a result, both Jenny Walker and Gavin Morrison have been selected to compete for the English and Scottish National teams respectively. They now intend to travel to Canada this summer with these teams to represent their country in the upcoming Commonwealth Lifesaving Championships.

Here some of the highlights from the weekend:

4 x 12m Line Throw Relay
4th - Lauren Dyson, Jenny Walker, Dorota Bortel & Polly Nagel 1:34.07

3rd - Joe Scurrah, Thomas Chamberlain, Rhys Clements & Gavin Morisson 1:07.62

4 x 25m Manikin Carry Relay
4th - Joe Scurrah, Thomas Chamberlain, Gavin Morrison & Harvey Yules 1:39.50
