Button becomes the second Briton in as many years to win the F1 Championship.

Jenson Button was crowned Formula 1 World Champion following his fifth place finish at the Brazilian Grand Prix on the 18th of October. It took Button 169 starts to gain his first Championship; only Nigel Mansell in 1992 had competed in more races than Button before winning the Championship with 176 starts. It is widely accepted that Button has proved himself to be a talented driver this season and he has been sat in one of the fastest cars on the grid. With teammate and closest rival Rubens Barrichello in pole position, Button had to performat his best on the final day. Sitting in fourteenth position after being hampered by poor weather, Button made up five positions on the first lap following an early incident. Button managed to get as high as second position at the half-way point, but finished in fifth place , scoring enough points for the World Championship with one round to spare.

Button on his victory said, ‘Today was the best race that I’ve driven in my career and I’m really going to enjoy this moment. For the team to win the Drivers and Constructors’ Championships here is just fantastic and they deserve it so very much after all the difficult times that we all went through over the winter. This season has been a rollercoaster ride from the elation of the wins at the start to the hard graft in the second half of the season which has seen us grind out the results needed to take the titles’.

The media focus is now on who the World Champion will drive for next year. Last year, Button drove for Honda, who decided to leave Formula 1. He was then left without a team, until Ross Brawn led a management buyout forming a new drive for Button out of the ashes of the Japanese team. In order for Jenson to have a seat with Brawn he took a drastic pay cut from £8M to £5M; a cut, which most would agree suggests serious commitment to the team. It is rumored that Button is expecting to return to his previous salary pay for the coming season and at the time of writing, Brawn are yet to make him an offer. Button’s manager Richard Goddard said ‘Brawn could have sorted Jensen out weeks ago and none of this would be going on. We’ve been trying to agree terms with them.’

Button has stated that he would like to stay with Brawn for the 2010 season although there is at least one team that looks set to throw a spanner in the works. McLaren have a free seat and as a result, speculation suggests they may be offering Button a seat next year: McLaren are in a better situation financially and an offer could seriously test the Brit’s commitment.

Of course, if Button were to join McLaren, his team mate would be last year’s world champion Lewis Hamilton, which itself gives rise to a number of potential issues. Hamilton is widely viewed as the fastest driver currently in Formula One, having failed to perform mainly as a result of his sub-standard car. It is entirely plausible that Button would not favour an option where he risks being in the shadow of a British driver. Formula One has seen various squabbling between its participants, but Hamilton and Button appear to have kept a distance throughout their careers. In fact, it is widely thought that Hamilton has been extremely respectful of Button, even when he was in a Honda at the back of the grid. Button did challenge Hamilton to a triathlon last year, since it was the only medium in which he thought he could actually compete with the McLaren driver, but Hamilton, after accepting, had to back down because McLaren and his manager, his father didn’t like the idea.

Mercedes’ spokesman, Norbert Haug has implied that Jenson is not on his way to McLaren, but next seasons Championship could become an all-British affair. With Hamilton and Button dominating the past two years in the World Championships the future looks bright for both. Imagine a Button versus Hamilton showdown with both racers in equal equipment? Then we really would find out, which Brit has got talent?
