With the return of Michael Schumacher to the sport, and current world champion Jenson Button teaming up with last year’s winner Lewis Hamilton to race for McLaren, it seems that this years championship could be a thrilling spectacle. Schumacher’s return to the sport to race for Mercedes was no doubt a shock for many especially considering he is now 41 years of age, however few will be doubting his ability to be a major contender for this year’s title, looking at his previous record of seven world titles and 91 race victories. Returning to the sport at his age proves what a remarkable sportsman he is, however at the age of 41 many may be questioning whether he is the driver that he used to be. Racing drivers tend to slow down as they age, and whether Schumacher still has the drive and determination to put everything on the line in the pursuit for victory will remain to be seen and there are certainly mixed feelings amongst those involved in the sport. Button’s decision to join up with Hamilton and create an all English line up at McLaren will have all British fans buzzing with excitement, however he needs to prove that this was the correct move for his career and not a step in the wrong direction. It shall be an interesting prospect to see how the two drivers match up on the track, mainly down to the fact they drive in two different ways. McLaren will have to up their game to try and provide a car which is suited to the needs of both Button and Hamilton. McLaren’s newest recruit may also have to learn to play second fiddle to Hamilton this season as many at McLaren see Hamilton as their star man. Will Button be able to cope with that kind of treatment? That is something racing fans will have to wait and see. With Schumacher’s return, Button and Hamilton teaming up, and not to write off other drivers such as Vettel and Alonso, the 2010 season is set to be filled with excitement.
