The problem with this isn’t that it’s too mellow or too sensitive for my tastes. Mellow and sensitive can be done fantastically well, as demonstrated by the latest Sufjan Stevens, Coco Rosie, or Antony and the Johnsons records. What isn’t acceptable is how contrived ‘Fix You’ sounds. Either the Coldplay boys completely lack perspective, or they really know their target audience. ‘Fix You’ may be ‘anthemic’, ‘emotional’, ‘life-affirming’, ‘inspired’ and ‘sensitive’. However it’s also predictable, entirely unoriginal and mind-numbingly boring.
