All four bands are featured on the NME tour later this month and this in itself is enough to ensure maximum airplay and a comfortable number of record sales. By the end of summer, the chances are at least one of those bands will play a headline slot at one of the festivals and the others will pick up a handful of nominations for various awards throughout the year. So, The Edge decided to go down a different route. Here are some of the bands, who by the end of 2006, are hoping to be where the likes of the Arctic Monkeys are now. These are the next, NEXT
LOUIS XIV: are a funky, raunchy, 60’s sounding rock ‘n’ roll four-piece from San Diego. They are like the Rolling Stones, T-Rex, The Velvet Underground, The Beatles and The Kinks all rolled into one Brit pop-sounding bundle of fun. Their songs have a bite to them you thought only possible from Jagger himself, and with their fake British accents would definitely not have been out of place in the sexually liberating decade. This little secret is best not kept to ourselves! Check them out at www.louisxiv.net. JR
PANIC! AT THE DISCO: One band everyone should be looking out for this year is Panic! At The Disco (pictured). They’re starting to get a little bit more noticed actually, and I think they’ll get big later on this year. Their first album is out at the moment on the Fueled By Ramen/Decaydance label. It’s called ‘A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out’ and, for me, is one of the highlights of late 2005 and very early 2006. There’s a lot of variety between the songs. Sometimes, as with a lot of emo/punk albums, most of the songs sound really similar, but the use of different instruments like pianos as opposed to the typical drumkit, bass and guitar trio give the album a different sound that can stand out from the crowd. This means that you can immediately tell each song apart, and that makes a good album. Panic! are like Fall Out Boy, but better and with techno. So if you liked ‘Sugar We’re Going Down’, you’ll really like ‘The Only Difference Between Martyrdom and Suicide is Press Coverage’. THE PISTOLAS: If it’s energetic, spiky garage rock you’re after in 2006, Norwich four-piece The Pistolas are definitely for you! The band creates a dynamic and alluring raw energy by fusing lead vocalist Simon’s skittish and edgy lyrics with the melodious backing vocals of Bassist Naomi. Tight, frantic melodies, angular guitar rifts and Simon’s charismatic delivery onstage, create a whirlwind of nervous energy and vitality when playing live which enthralls throughout. Influences are Sonic Youth, The Pixies and Sleater Kinney. Emerging from a city like Norwich with a musical legacy which isn’t exactly exploding is a challenge for any band, but after winning Best Rock and Best Live Act at last year’s Diesel U Music Awards, and with the opening lyrics of their debut single declaring ‘Listen, Listen, Pay Attention’, The Pistolas have definitely announced their arrival in audacious style! Check them out at http://www.pistolas-pistolas.com/ The Pistolas release their debut single on Fierce Panda on 23rd Jan. AT
CAINA: was conceived in late 2004 as the solo project of a musician called ‘A’. In May 2005, a limited edition ep was released. Combining elements of post-rock, black metal, experimental/ambient music, alt-country and neo-folk, Caina’s sound is hard to describe, but something like Sigur Ros or Explosions in the Sky in Hell might just do the trick. 2006 has already brought interest from underground labels which will hopefully culminate in the release of a second ep - and perhaps even an album. A number of live acoustic sets are planned for late winter/early spring and will be Caina’s first forays into the live arena. BLACKBUD: are a Wiltshire-based three-piece rock band. They have been described as sounding like a mixture of Led Zeppelin and Radiohead. Joe Taylor, the lead vocalist, is blessed with a smooth and beautiful voice, which is as much at home on more up-beat tracks as it is slow (of which they have both). Like Jeff Buckley with a bit more life to them (no pun intended), they are definitely worth a listen. For more info visit www.blackbud.co.uk.

THE WRECKERS: is the country-esque side-project of Michelle Branch, who is massive in the US but has had limited success here. She’s teamed up with Nashville-born Jessica Harp and their debut album ‘Stand Still, Look Pretty’ is out some time in 2006. Live mp3s are widely available from their American 2004/5 tour with Tyler Hilton. Best songs to check out: ‘Lay Me Down’ and ‘The Good Kind’, available on the One Tree Hill soundtrack. But don’t let that put you off, their refreshing sound is much more alt/country than Branch’s solo work. Check out the official site: www.thewreckers.org

THE FEELING: This band formed in the unlikely setting of a ski resort on the French Alps even though they are all British. When the novelty of playing cover songs to drunken tourists wore off, the five lads decided to turn professional, and The Feeling was born. Now with the backing of label heavyweights, Island Records, The Feeling are set to break through to the big league and rack up a devoted following along the way. Their influences range from The Beatles to The Beachboys. This musical direction is clear from the type of music they produce. They aim to dominate the middle ground of popular music, somewhere between rock and pop. With cheerful melodies and bouncy rhythms, they are hotly-tipped to be the next big thing. ST
