Single Reviews January 2006, part 2 (Mogwai, Starsailor, The Crimea)

10th February 2006

Mogwai: Friend of the Night - Preceding the long-awaited fifth studio album titled ‘Mr Beat’, Mogwai are set to make a comeback with this excellent new single. Mogwai have a habit of writing attractive music, which is subtly infectious. These stealth-like qualities allow ‘Friend of the Night’ to wash over the listener in a calm and gentle way. This track is entirely instrumental and highly recommended. 5/5 - ST

Starsailor: ‘This Time’ - Starsailor sound like every other mainstream four-piece indie band in Britain. They really don’t do anything that different, or in fact anything that exciting. They are however, for some mysterious reason, really quite good! ‘This Time’ is by no means amazing, but it’s a good solid song. It is well written, has a catchy chorus and front man James Walsh polishes everything off perfectly with his undeniably captivating voice. ‘This Time’ won’t change your life, but it’s definitely worth a listen along the way. 4/5 - JM

The Crimea: Lottery Winners on Acid - This excellent new single from John Peel’s darlings, The Crimea, is both catchy and quirky. It dazzles and puzzles any one who listens to it. Singer Davey MacManus sings with conviction as well as emotion. A real feel good song which, with its theme of happiness and hope, will appeal to a wide demographic. 5/5 - ST
