Single Reviews March 2006 part 2 (Massive Attack, Liam Frost and the Slowdown Fa

2nd April 2006

Massive Attack: Live with me - The first Massive attack single in three years is sure not to disappoint. ‘Live with me’ is a soulful number breaking away from the hypnotic sound of ‘100th window’ yet retaining the essence of their unique sound. Terry Callier’s soulful voice lends an emotive (but not drippy) feel to the song underlining its theme of lost love. His voice rests on the backdrop of violin strings and a rhythmic beat reminiscent of ‘Teardrop.’ ‘Live with me’ is taken from the new Best Of album, ‘Collected’. 4/5 - ENL

Liam Frost & the Slowdown Family: She Paints Pictures EP - Having recently supported the likes of Stephen Fretwell and Elbow, Liam Frost pre-empts a headline tour with the release of his debut EP. The title track is an upbeat affair that guarantees to raise a smile, while B-sides ‘Try Try Try’ and ‘Slow Slowly Slow’ remind why Frost has been referred to as the UK’s answer to Bright Eyes. Great stuff. 5/5 - GS

Les Incompétents: ‘How it all went wrong’ - The second single from London’s most entertaining band makes you want to dance. Although the lyrics highly emphasize what can go wrong when wanting to go to a disco, the stirring beats practically force you to move. The repetitive chorus is quite catchy: ‘I don’t know I know why you don’t wanna go to the disco…’ and the way guitars, bass and drums are played puts you in a good party mood. Les Incompétents are not incompetent at all. This song is fun - get it, go out and dance! 4/5 - MB
