Singles - Part 1: The Longcut, The Rifles, Juliette and the Licks

9th October 2006

The Longcut - ‘A Tried And Tested Method’: This is one of the pivotal tracks from The Longcut’s debut album ‘A Call And Response’ released earlier this year. Atmospheric and lightly dancey, ‘A Tried And Tested Method’ mixes pure vocal harmonies and rhythmic backing into an increasingly complicated wall of sound. However, what makes this single a success is that on top of this it’s still remarkably catchy. You’ll find yourself humming it even after the first time of hearing it. If you haven’t heard the album yet this is a great intro. - 4/5, CM

The Rifles - ‘Peace And Quiet’: This is the third single to be taken from the London based 4-piece’s debut album ‘No Love Lost’, but by no means the best. The influences are blatent, the song as a whole rather generic, but it’s an enjoyable listen nonetheless. If you can get past the Weller-esque vocals and Libertines guitar work, the chorus alone makes it worth a go. If you’re a fan of this, It’s worth checking out the album too. - 3/5, JM

Juliette and the Licks - ‘Hot Kiss’: ‘Hot Kiss’ is a fine example of what the Licks do best; high-energy, simple rock n’ roll plus Juliette’s signature aggressive vocals. This song is a far cry from the popular British indie, which, (if you are anything like me), you might be getting bored with. J&TL’s are an acquired taste; you will either love them or hate them. I personally consider them to be a breath of fresh-air. Give ‘Hot Kiss’ a listen and decide for yourself! - 4/5, LS
