So how’s the tour going?
Andy: Interesting!
Tahita: It’s been up and down.
Andy: There have been times when we’ve been wondering, why we’re doing this. On the whole there’s been a positive response though, even at the gigs we thought were a disaster we’ve had people look us up on my space and leave us really great comments!
And how’s the album coming along?
Tahita: We’ve got the deal, with Modular, but we’re just doing it in our own time. We’ve probably got enough songs for an album, but we’re just seeing how it goes, ideally we’re aiming for sometime next spring.
How did you come up with the name, New Young Pony Club?
Tahita: I love ponies, but I was never allowed one as a child…
Andy: Not even a My Little Pony?
Tahita: Not even a My Little Pony, I was deprived as a child, everything in the house had to be wooden and educational. But also we liked the idea of a team name, that we’re all part of a club.
On you’re website you say you take something from the past and make something for the future, what influences you from the past?
Tahita: There’s loads of stuff which has been forgotten about, everybody seems to quote the same four bands as their influence; The Stooges and Gang Of Four always seem to get a mention, but there’s a whole scene to draw from. We like a totally eclectic mix, we love that quirky leftfield pop; A Certain Ratio, Grace Jones, The Stranglers.
And what is it you’re making for the future, that hasn’t been done before?
Andy: We’re original!
Tahita: We like to think we appeal to people now. The big difference between us and those bands we’ve just mentioned is that our crowds have lived through dance music.
Andy: Everybody is open to dance, everyone has one dance record in their collection.
Tahita: But people don’t necessarily want to go to a club, with their glow sticks. We marry the dance ethic with the pop ethic, and make something that you can dance to and sing along to.
Your music just seems really fun and accessible?
Tahita: Bands do get hung up on trivialities, they can take it too seriously, like wanting to be the next big thing in NME, but that’s because that’s what they have grown up wanting. Of course there is something fun about being in a band, because your not working in a bank for a living, but making music, and music is this huge pot you can take anything from it. But our music is about having a good time, and making music that everybody likes.
It would seem, for your video for Ice Cream the band has a bit of a sweet tooth?
Tahita: Ha ha! We’re a band who is obsessed with food! Put it this way 60% of the band are obsessed with sex, but 100% of us are obsessed with food!
Where do you see yourselves in a year’s time?
Tahita: Making music…
Andy: The thing is whether we’re a big band or small band, we’d like to make one of those albums that everyone loves and has in their collection, like Badly Drawn Boy.
Tahita: And Portishead…
Andy: Not Portishead, they disappeared after Dummy, they didn’t grow, we can, we will grow.
