The Whitehouse Explosion

Sound Proj-x Vs. Stimulate feat, Darren Tate @ The Whitehouse, 4th November: Whitehouse’s friendly door staff led the way into a modern, sumptuous room filled with the swirling sounds of deep house and techno, from a heavy soundsyste. Not only were the drinks reasonably priced and the acoustics crisp, but pretty much everyone inside the venue had on a warm smile and had kind and friendly words to say.

The atmosphere in the downstairs room was upbeat and funky when we arrived and already the crowds were gathering to the sound of Deeko and Audiodice, representing the notorious Sound Proj-X.

We followed our curiosity then upstairs, to Level 2, where Gwa was mixing the room into a frenzy with his tech-house version of AFX’s Windowlicker and enough deep house to send you floating through the clouds. This room was primarily focused on Funky House and Electro as it was hosted by Stimulate, but the techy influences deinitely has me glued to the dancefloor and dancing well into the night.

Audiodice kindly gave out free mix cds, one of which hasn’t actually come off my player yet it is so good! Having changed from Hard Trance to Funky House, his more underground influences make for a promising future, with his style of Dirty Tough Electro House already causing a stir along the South coast and London.

After enjoying the house sounds of Omaha, we headed back to Level 2, in time for Matt Handy’s dose of Hard Trance and Techno. The whole room was really loving the stomping style of his tunes, especially the more classic Trance tunes which got a few inevitable cheesy laser reaches. His set really got everyone going for the rest of the night, followed by banging sets from the famous Darren Tate, who ripped out some of his legendary anthems produced this year, like ‘The Sun is Shining’ and ‘Winter’. His concoction of Hard Trance and Progressive House really is at the peak of its perfection, and Darren, or Jurgen Vries, is definitely one to watch!

One of my favourites of the night though, had to be Dan Apps. It was a surprise to me that he was playing at all, but as usual he did not disapoint with his funky hard dance and trance. As part of Stimulate and organisation of the night I asked him how one of the first nights seem to be going for him. He told me that although it was a promising night for the City, as there has been a lack of trance and techno nights, the event did still not pull the crowds as much as he had hoped. I realised though, that although there wasn’t full capacity, the place was still fairly full and the night felt like a success. The ecstatic and warm atnmosphere more than made up for any slight lacking in numbers, and I felt happy to have been a part of this new monthly event.

Next month sees the likes of Audiodice again with his Tough House and Dirty Electro, and I urge you to check this one out!
