The F(r)action Family Party

23rd May 2007
Clare Saxon

What do you get if you mix a Metal club with a Breaks and Psy Trance night? Two separate rooms of people by the looks of it... but F(r)action’s new night at Unit 22 is something definitley worth checking out, so don’t let the goths scare you!

Perched over the surprisingly pretty docks, Unit 22 is a good sized club, and especially for the night the slightly smaller room was kitted out with Tripp’s spectacular psychedelic backdrops.

We arrived just in time to catch the talented Ollspin, who started the City’s popular breaks night Influenza, and returned back from his new home in Bristol to play some very lovely dirty breaks. He was followed by JDO, banging out some of the filthiest breaks I have heard in a long time.

By this time the floor was filling up healthily, and the crowd were elated and bouncy. I took some time out from the warm colourful room to explore the rest of the club, and entered the larger second room, with the big glass wall looking out over the water.

In here was a cd dj playing metal (though not punk even though i asked nicely) alternative dance like Pitchshifter and Prodigy and popular rock anthems. The crowd here weren’t dancing as much as the breaks room, nor were they smiling as much, but it was still refreshing to be at a night with such diversity in the music. Surprisingly the two rooms kind of went well together, if you like both types of music its just a shame the crowds didn’t mix more.

Next up from F(r)action was the rms, a breaks producer and dj from the City who is one of the best south coast breaks djs, and is playing at many festivals this summer. He got the crowd even more buzzing with some of his own splendiferously dark tunes, in time for Anti-Science from Waveshape records, playing his blend of nuskool breaks which got the dance floor vibrating with its sythesized basslines.

Youthful Implants then rocked everyone to his hardcore breaks, fulfilling our desire to bounce just that bit higher. Ollywood and Mr. Reload from Hardcore beats label were last, and they finished up the breaks to perfection, leaving me with the satisfaction after three years of not quite finding it, that there is definitley a thriving underground breaks scene to be had in Southampton.

My dear friend Dezi from Acid Rain was last up, rinsing some beautful dark psy trance which floated everyone up into the clouds. It made a nice change from the breaks, but in keeping with the rhythm and atmosphere, it was a good set to finish with.

I had a wonderful night, despite my dissertation deadline looming, and would definitley recommend the next night at Unit 22 if you like to mix your penchant for rock with some filthy and fantastic breaks and psy trance!]

The Out Of the Void radio will be hosted by Voodoo Freqs on 18th May and on Platimun Breaks, hosted by Breaksfm Channel 1 on 31st May. Hoffman and Model 101 play their amazingly produced breaks every Wednesday on Breaksfm channel 1, so be sure to tune in, and look out for the next F(r)action dates. Don’t miss the next one at Unit 22 - on 27th of May.
