Singles Review: The Heights, Arcade Fire and Shiny Toy Guns

26th May 2007

The Heights: ‘For Real’ - The overall sound is refreshingly light but not entirely hollow. Catchy hooks and toe tapping beats make this single an easy listen. The casual and almost lazy sound of the guitars is neatly finished with mellow and slightly raspy vocals. Unfortunately the band seems to be operating within in a limited range and the song never quite takes off. This is simple music well done but nothing special.

Arcade Fire: ‘Intervention’ - The band presents an interesting sound that is certainly something a little different. It is a strange cocktail of sounds ranging from an organ to light acoustics. The disadvantage of all this textured sound is that the vocals are almost lost in the midst and seem to be just hovering in the background. As a result of this the whole piece is a bit grating and tinny and not a particularly pleasant listen. It is a good effort in terms of creativity but with a disappointing outcome.

Shiny Toy Guns: ‘You are the one’ - The 3 tracks that feature here vary in style from quirky electro rock to a more encapsulating and airy chilled out sound. Each song manages to sound suitably complete with a full and rich sound. The sound is offset with good contrasting vocals that help to soften the blow of the more intense electronic pieces. The complete package is actually quite mellow and flowing.
