Although not released in America, I was still rather excited about going to see this film, due to its good reviews in the UK. Perhaps if I had gone to see it without having read any reviews I would have enjoyed it a bit more...
My Little Eye is a very modern film, in terms of the content, but also in terms of the technology used for filming. Digital film is used to create the effect of a wall mounted surveillance camera, which follows the story of five young people isolated in an old house in the middle of nowhere. In the style of Big Brother, they applied to share the house for six months whilst being broadcast on an Internet site, the prize being $1million. The only catch is if one of them leaves, they all lose. Only a few days away from their prize, the housemates get more and more paranoid as it appears that the ‘company’ in charge is bringing up secrets from their past to scare them into leaving. They start discovering more about the mysterious website and this is where the film becomes gory and the death count rises by the minute.Although rather innovative and scary at the beginning, mainly due to the use of sound and editing, the film lacks any kind of innovation near the end as it simply surrenders itself to a traditional slasher film. The zooming sounds of the camera as well as the emphasised crashing noises make you jump near the beginning, but as you get used to them something more is needed to keep the quality of the film going and it is not the axe and excessive amounts of blood that Evans introduces. He also relies on the fact that this may actually happen in real life, maybe I am being a bit too idealistic here, but I think it is rather unlikely, even in America.
