Singles: Esser - Satisfied

12th November 2008
Morgan Taylor

First impressions of Esser and his ‘This is England’ - combat rock era - Joe Strummer look give little clues to his music style.

Beginning with a piano intro that wouldn’t be out of place in an old Dracula B movie, the song suddenly morphs into a psychedelic fair ground ride experience, supported by an eerie, hypnotic rhythm and a repeated piano ditty ripped straight from a 1960’s musical movie. Despite Esser’s ability to casually mix and intertwine a variety of musical styles, he does have the potential to overdo it and clutter the song with differing and clashing ideas, however he successfully creates a lo fi indie electro with hints of ska, gypsies and carrousel music. He vents in this song his apparent inability to please women (that I think most men can connect with), however personally, I’m pleasantly ‘satisfied’ with Esser’s latest effort.
