Welcome along to our Elections Night Live 2016 live blog, where we’ll be kicking off from 8pm when the first results are announced.
A big thank you to the three of you who followed this liveblog!
Apparently we haven’t given Thomas enough credit.. um, we beg to differ…
Only one female representative on the new team!
Phew! That was tense!
Your 2016/17 sabbatical team is Alex Hovden (Pres), Cameron Meldrum (VP DCI), David Allwright (VP Welfare), Dan Varley (VP Engagement), Flora Noble (VP Communities), Thomas Proven (VP Sport) and Elliot Grater (VP Education)
Congratulations to Alex Hovden! Commiseration brownies for all the other candidates.
Alex Hovden wins Union President!
It’s between Sam Bailey and Alex Hovden…
Lii eliminated at stage 3…
Zehong eliminated at stage 2…
RuPaul references everywhere from our Union Pres…
Thomas is also eliminated….
RON gone stage 1…
Zehong Au sent a mass email to campaigning, and therefore guilty of breaking elections law…
“Prepare yourself with a big one”
“Shots, shots, shots, more shots and a whole lot of sass” – Our Union President on how to deal with elections.
Here it comes….
Sam is leading our exit poll…
THIS IS THE BIG ONE GUYS, ULTIMATE BNOC COMING UP…
Back to the Cube! Woop woop!
Our politics editor Sam Williams is in the studio interviewing the candidates (…except for Zehong Au… who still isn’t here…)
This time it’s actually time for the final position! ….Union president!!
Whatever comes of this evening I think we can all be proud we brought so much joy to Chris Stark.
Student trustees: Mark Cole & Hadeeka Taj
Chris Stark is all of us tonight.
Apparently Zehong- one of the Presidential candidates – hasn’t shown up…
Apparently Zehong Au hasn’t turned up yet! Oops!
Our exit poll was quite tight!
Sam Bailey: 36.89%
Alex Hovden: 32.01%
Lii Mohamed 13.92%
Thomas Gravatt 6.33%
Zehong Au 5.61%
Let’s see how it turns out!
Lii, who is running for President says, he is “feeling good”… “All we can feel can feel at this stage is safe. I’m cool with whatever, it’s been cool and tiring, all we can do is enjoy it, I’ll be going out whatever the results, even if I lose, I’ll be at Switch or Oceana, I wouldn’t change anything – the hello parody was peak, I don’t think i’d change anything.”
Oceanas, Switch or Jesters- where to continue the party is the real decision of elction night…
It’s time for the final position! Union president!
Following his landslide victory, Jack Pethick grabbed winning VP Sports candidate Tom Provan:
The Tab may say he has a nice bum, but Cameron has the biggest smile of the evening!
Jack Pethick grabbed outgoing VP Sports Development Jamie Wilson to get his thoughts on the night, Tom’s win and next weeks Varsity competition:
Although, since the campaign has finished maybe it should be “yes we could…mm”
Yes we Cam!
Back to announce the new VP DCI, Kerry Sclater is back on stage!
Only two more positions left!
We’ve had the most contested student leader positions this year!

Alice will be taking care of the Scene next year!
“Student media is so important, you all do it out of your own spare time”
On the last day of her job we can all say….
…See ya later, Kerry Sclater
I have no regrets.
Also, Tom, did a cheeky plug that Surge are award winning, so are we mate, so are we…
Whoever gets this job, runs elections next year (and is the big boss of Wessex Scene)…
Kerry says she loves the power she gives to students!
Kerry Sclater (my boss) is on the stage (she’s the current VP DCI)
Time for VP Democracy and Creative Industries!
Ben Franklin – Union President, just taught the crowd how to twerk bendandsnap
Only two positions yet to go!
Apparently the voice of SUSU on SUSU TV is running out of jokes. I couldn’t tell.
We got the chance to speak to the new VP Communities, Flora Noble!
Honestly, I’m over the moon! This has been the most stressful week of my life and I’m so happy to finally be able to kind of chill and really work on what I want to get going next year.
2. What have you enjoyed the most about campaigning?
Getting to chat to people, getting to know people, getting to know the other candidates as well because they’ve got such amazing ideas – it’s such a shame that they can’t all kind of get involved because it would be amazing… but I’ve had such an incredible time just getting to know people and learning different skills, like learning how to campaign properly.
3. How are you going to celebrate tonight?
I’m going to Jesters! But I’m going to wait for the others; I want to see how many of the others want to go to Jesters.
4. What are you planning to do once you start the role?
Come July, I really, really want to sort the Halls Reps out; I want to really, really make a start on getting satellite sites going, and getting people to know how satellite sites work and how they want to interact with us and stuff, which is amazing… So yeah, there’s a lot of stuff I want to get going – but Freshers’ first!
“More tequila” seems to be a
popular phrase from candidates…
Alex Hovden (running for Union President) gave us his thoughts on Election night and the campaign so far.
Alex says the tension of election night has been building for him since 4pm, he’s thoughly enjoyed campaigning and is excited to see how the night ends. What ever the outcome Alex is looking forwards to heading to Oceana later.
He has loved meeting new people thoughout the campaign and speaks really positively about his competitors and the strength of their policies. He regrets not being able to make it to Winchester and if he did anything differently he would really want to be able to visit more campuses.
He has been on a media blackout since 5pm and can’t belive elections are almost over, when asked how he feels about this he said “I’ll let you know if I win.”
That was a big surprise to all of us here…
This position was uncontested! Tom Provan vs. RON… FIGHT!
Next up is VP Sports Development!
“It’s nice to see the team for next year coming together, and see my replacement”
“Never have regrets, that’s the worst thing. It’s good to take a step back and just enjoy life.”
“I’ve been using my experience much more – getting out and talking to students”
“We’re in that strange stage of limbo where there’s nothing you can do but you don’t know the result”
Deanna Rex is elected Intramural officer
Jack Harvey has been elected AU President.
Sam ‘shout with Sam’ Bailey has, ummm, lost his voice
Bryony Newman’s popped by to give WessexScene her thoughts
on the evening so far. Despite being unoptimistic
about her chances at winning DCI, Bryony is full of smiles and sporting “Vote
Bryony!” nail varnish.
She thinks it’s vital that the next DCI gives equal
attention to all DCI departments; she protests that Union Films often gets sidelined
despite earning a majority of the income for the DCI department. They sold out 14
screenings of Deadpool recently and yet they are struggling to do anything to celebrate
their 50th anniversary. Ideally Bryony would love to hold an outdoor film
screening but they are currently struggling to get a budget.
To celebrate the end of elections Bryony is having a mass sleepover
and has built a blanket fort in her house, whatever happens she’s looking
forwards to relaxing at the studio Ghibli marathon tomorrow with friends.
Despite the occasional impulses to throw herself in front of
moving vehicles, Bryony has appreciated all the support she has received and the
“Election Cocktails” seem to have made the whole thing worth it.
Dan Varley, who won VP Engagement at the start of the night says he’s “over the moon” and that “I’m so glad I was first because I hate waiting, apart from walking out on stage at the wrong time it’s all been incredible. Getting to talk to people who didn’t know about elections was amazing, and that’s mostly been on nights out – Jesters and Sobar have a great crowd. As an uncontested candidate, I wanted to put myself up there a lot – it’s a lot, I should have bad mouthed RON a bit more. I can’t wait to bring more life to uni, especially the cube!
David Allwright’s on the stage – he wants someone to buy him some champagne! Cheapskate!
Total votes: 3920
David Allwright: 1981 – winning in the first round!
VP Welfare was the tightest result in our exit poll, with David Allwright in the lead at 38.91%, Christina Vinothan with 38.13%, George Seabrook 15.56%
Housing officer: Louise Bellamy
Equality & Diversity Officer: Frazer Delves
Ethics and Environment Officer: Eleanor Davis
Nuala McBride, from Wessex Scene, briefly spoke to the VP Welfare Candidates – George Seabrook, David Allwright and Christina Vinothan. All three candidates were is good spirits awaiting the result. David Allwright was very secretive about tonight’s commiseration / celebration plans; but the other two candidates were keen on heading to Jesters! A tip for next year’s candidates from George was to wear a face mask when spray painting banners …
It’s time for the Welfare zone!
Apparently things are heating up in The Cube… There’s a commiseration brownie thief and his name is Bruno! BruNO!
Cameron Meldrum who is running for VP DCI says “I’m feeling excited but also nervous, but I’m drinking either way, I love some alcohol in me, but there’s no Guinness in Bar 2, I will be heading to Jesters, I’ve had a really good campaign, in particular, I’m really proud of my poster designs, I’ve been really fortunate, Toby (Leveson) has been organising my life, he’s been even more controlling than normal. But I am looking forward to it being over, it’s been great getting away from degree, I played recorder with a pirate, lots of good videos (like carpool camaoke) but it’s also been stressful, I’m glad about getting my life back.”
Elliot is the first person to bring a drink on stage tonight – what a lad!
Total valid votes 3871, Elliot got 3176. Elliot is elected!
Will Elliot Grater be any match for RON?
Apparently 3 years ago, Union President Ben Franklin had a “great time – if you know what I mean” in the SUSU building. Scandal!
Rebecca Lake says she’s “a bit disappointed, she hoped for more votes, but Flora is very good. There’s a great atmosphere here tonight, its just a shame I can’t enjoy it. I wouldn’t change campaigning, I did everything I could, I loved my Game Of Thrones theme. Flora needs to focus on people on placement, at SGH and MedSoc – I will be telling her that. I’m so relieved elections is over, I just want to go to bed.”
Shruti Verma is on the stage to announce the results for the education zone!
Elliot is set to win according to our EXIT poll – with 75% of the vote share.
Education is up next, which is uncontested…
SUSU appear to have tweeted one result and announced another…
Flora wanted to thank her parents for bailing her out last week when she ran out of money.
Sounds like a real live-wire competition for VP Communities. Credit to the contestants for taking it right to the line.
Flora is “over the moon” and says “she didn’t expect this at all” and wants to say thank you to her “parents” and Cameron Meldrum, who’s running for VP DCI.
VP Communities is Flora Noble
In the second round, quota has not been reached Rebecca Lake is eliminated
3963 votes cast for VP Communities, first round results:
According to SUSU TV, David Mendoza-Wolfson was ‘frankly a 4/10 president’. Watch the fly-by…
Marcus Burton, who lost to in a Presidential run in 2014 describes Sam Bailey as “president elect” – it’s getting sassy in there.
Sam Bailey, VP Welfare ans Presidential Candidate says “it’s amazing that so many people ran”
SUSU TV is giving unsuccessful candidates a “commiseration brownie”. Makes it all worth it if you ask me.
Halls officer goes into a third round of voting – Sam Higman is elected as halls officer with 629 votes. She’s only the second female halls officer ever.
1230 votes cast for Halls officer, in the words of Anjt “that’s a lot”..
MedSoc Pres is elected as Jingy Alom!
Giles Howard is elected PGR Officer
Next to be announced is VP Student Communities. Wessex Scene have just spoken to (a very nervous) Ruchika Menon who is running for this position and she assures me that she will be celebrating at Switch either way! But, the first thing she will be doing when the results are announced is calling her Mom.
Kesia Davies is elected WSA officer
There are three candidates for VP Student Communities, Flora Noble, Rebecca Lake and Ruchika Menon.
Reviews of Ben Franklin’s biography…
Current VP Communities says he ‘LOVES the current Sabb team’
Moving on to Communities!
Flora Noble gives her thoughts to Wessex Scene for the evening ahead….
Ahead of the announcement for VP Communities, Rebecca Lake stops by the Wessex Scene table to give us her thoughts…
“Getting really drunk” seems to be the plan for all candidates tonight
Wonder how he stays engaged with reality….
Apparently Dan Varley has spent 14 days straight drinking…
799 votes went to RON in the VP Engagement elections
Dan Varley is our new VP Engagement – 2988 votes!
5507 total votes – that’s less than last year!
The first winner is announced! Congratulations to Isobel Worrall RAG President!
Toby Leveson, running for Surge station manager says: “I’m not doing anything tonight, I’m just getting drunk”
According to SUSUtv Ron has never won an election. Here’s hoping that doesn’t change this evening…
Over in the studio, our politics editor turned news anchor Sam Williams is chatting away in typical fashion to Dan Varley, who is running for VP Engagement this evening.
While you wait…we asked the candidates some tough questions at the Q&A…you can check them out here.
SUSU TV is broadcasting live at this link!
Or maybe not..
And SUSUtv are live (apparently)..
Dan Varley gives his thoughts to Wessex Scene on the evening ahead…
I’m really excited for tonight – I’m a little hangry on account of the fact that I haven’t eaten, but looking forward to this evening!
Looking back on my campaign, I’m pretty happy with it – I perhaps could have improved visibility by putting up a few more posters, but I’m fairly much satisfied. I could have talked down RON’s policies a little more – didn’t do enough damage in that respect!
On the whole though, I’m happy the campaign is almost over and I’m looking forward to moving on.
Apparently the cube is empty – great show to student engagement there!
We’ve got our first candidate here in the cube – Dan Varley!
We’re being told by our pals at SUSUtv that its only 10 minutes until the start…things are tense!
Our exit poll is getting a lot of attention – President and Welfare are particularly close!
