Welcome to Wessex Scene’s live coverage of the second 2016 US Presidential debate between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, held at Washington University in St Louis, Missouri. We’ll be covering the debate blow by blow and fact checking the candidates’ statements.
We’ll also be providing updates on Twitter @WSPolitics.
Welcome to our coverage of the second presidential debate! We’ll be covering the buildup and the debate itself, which is scheduled to start 2am UK time.
The second presidential debate is where things really get interesting, more so this year than ever before (I feel like I have used that phrase throughout the last year talking about this elections cycle). The nerves of the first debate are behind the candidates, the second debate often a more relaxed and open affair and usually more focussed on the issues. In 2012, Obama lost the first debate but it was the 2nd debate he clawed back to dominate Romney. What will we see tonight? Can Clinton convince those undecided voters? How will the latest Trump controversy effect his night? That and more tonight right here on Wessex Scene
Donald Trump has now arrived at the venue. According to CBS News, he has invited a number of women who claim to have been sexually abused by Bill Clinton, having chaired a round table discussion with them earlier today.
Hillary Clinton has now arrived at the debate hall. The second debate will commence soon.
Trump praised himself for not going low and using claims against Bill Clinton to put Hillary Clinton, today he has invited those claiming sexual assault against him to sit on the front row
Billy Bush, the presenter to whom Trump was seen making sexist comments in a controversial video released this week, has reportedly been suspended from the Today show.
Very bleak prediction from Sam Nunberg (Former Trump Strategist) on Trump’s chances for the election, following the controversial video leak this week.
Moderators Anderson Cooper (CNN) and Martha Raddatz (ABC) have taken to the stage.
1 minute to go… grab your popcorn…
The three women invited by Trump who accuse Bill Clinton of sexual abuse are in the front row of the audience.
Both candidates are surrounded by some level of newly emerged controversy. Trump with his sexist remarks on tape and Hillary with her conversation on Wall Street. This is a recipe for an eventful night.
The candidates take the stage, the Town Hall debate begins
No handshake between candidates this time, all pleasantries have gone out the window since the first debate.
First question to Clinton: Are the candidates showing the best behaviour for the american youth?

HIllary ‘Making sure we have the best education system from pre-school to college and making sure it’s affordable’
Trump “I agree with everything she [Clinton] said”
Hillary ‘I want us to heal our country and bring us together’ Trump remarks that he actually agrees with everything Hillary Clinton says.
Trump goes on to say he has met people from all over the country and has learnt from that. Once again he starts off calm in this debate
“Great trade deals, strong borders, law and order” Usual Trump rhetoric policy including working to help improve the lives for minorities to make american great again
Trump adamant his leaked tape was ‘Locker room talk’
Deflecting questions of his leaked tape by talking about ISIS
Trump baits and switches the focus from his ‘locker room talk’ to ‘ISIS’ the link between which is unclear

Hillary ‘He has said that this video does not represent who he is but I think it is clear to anyone who has seen it that it does represent exactly who he is’
Clinton saying that we weren’t surprised by Trumps leaked tape comments. Goes on to list other examples of Trump’s degrading of women throughout the last 12 months. “Yes this is who Donald Trump is”
Trump’s claims of Obamacare massively increasing premium costs, was only partially correct. The numbers carefully selected to emphasise his position. Full details at http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2015/oct/25/donald-trump/trump-obamacare-health-care-premiums-going-35-45-5/

Trump defends his tape by claiming Bill Clinton did actual actions not just talk
Trump on Bill Clinton ‘There has never been anyone in the history of politics that has never been as abusive to woman’
Hillary ‘My friend Michelle Obama advised us all – When they go low, you go high’
Clinton quoting Michelle Obama “When they go low, we go high”
Hillary ‘Everyone can draw their own conclusions tonight about whether the man on the video or on stage respects women’
Clinton pointing out that Trump never apologises for the hurtful words he uses. Or that he never answers the questions just using his own personal rhetoric
Trump – “Your campaign started [the birther movement]”
Trump ‘Unlike the Bernie Sanders race which you did not win fair and square, just check wikileaks’

Hillary ‘That was a mistake (emails) I take accountability for using a personal email account’
Hillary ‘Misleading accusations from critics and others. After a year long investigation there is no evidence that anyone hacked the server she was using.’
Trump – ‘I am so disappointed in congressmen for allowing this to happen including the republicans’
Trump back to interrupting the debate. Even after being told not to.
‘Please allow her to response, she didn’t talk when you talked.’
Trump refuses to stop interrupting
Trump claims that Clinton is trying to get away from her email question.
Trump ‘Why aren’t you bringing up the emails’ yet the last question was directly about the emails and possibility of classified information being leaked.
“Nice. 1 on 3” When he asked why Cooper was not bringing up the emails, Cooper’s response prior was, “Because you did”
Trump claims it’s a 3 on 1 debate.
Trump ‘no I’m a gentleman Hillary, you go ahead’
Hillary – ‘Before the affordable care act women use to be charged more than men. You can be on your parents policy up to 26’
Hillary ‘Additional support to small businesses so they can afford to provide health insurance’
FUN CONGRESS FACT: Republicans have repeatedly blocked attempts to amend the Affordable Care Act, they want it to fail so they can use it as a debating point.
Hillary ‘We’re at 90% health insurance coverage, that’s the highest we’ve been in our country’
Trump – ‘Obama care is a disaster’
Trump – ‘Obama care will never work. very bad health insurance. Far too expensive’
Replaced by what, Mr Trump?
Hillary – ‘If we were to start all over again we might come up with a different system. we had an employer based system’
“Lets fix what broken about it, not throw it all away and give it all back to the insurance companies” – Clinton
Hillary – ‘Obama care was to fill a slot for people working but still couldn’t afford insurance’
Clinton campaign alleges Trump would take health insurance away from 21 million Americans.
Trump claims that single-payer healthcare is ‘slow’ and ‘catastrophic’ in some elements. Citing Canada as an example. However, according to the World Health Organisation, the majority of single-payer systems provide better healthcare than the USA. http://www.who.int/healthinfo/paper30.pdf
Anderson Cooper not pulling punches tonight, how will Trump handle this tonight?
‘Islamophobia on the rise, how will you deal with people like me being labelled as a threat to the country when the election is over?’ – Muslim audience member
Trump – ‘When people see something going on they need to report, muslims need to report the problems when they see them. If they don’t do that it’s a very difficult situation for our country’
Trump – ‘She or president Obama won’t say the name Radical Islamic Terrorism’
Clinton – “We’ve had muslims in american since George Washington and we have had very successful muslims. My vision of America is that everyone has a place in America… if they do their part”
Hillary – ‘My vision of America is an America where everyone has a place if you are willing to work hard, you do your part and contribute to the community’
Hillary – ‘We need American muslims to be apart of our eyes and ears on our front lines’
We are not at war with Islam – Clinton
Hillary – ‘We are not at war with Islam and it is a mistake and plays into the hands of terrorist to act like they are’
Captain Kahn would be alive today if Trump was president (Not invading Iraq)
Trump’s Muslim ban has changed to extreme vetting from people from certain areas around the world

Trump – ‘I’m going to force them right back into their country, they are murderers and very bad people’
Trump – ‘she wants amnesty for everyone, it’s a horrible thing she is doing’
Trump continuing to claim that he was always against the Iraq war, fact checkers have consistently shown that he was initially for intervention on Howard Stern’s show in 2002. He later did change his position. http://europe.newsweek.com/donald-trump-iraq-war-buzzfeed-howard-stern-2002-hillary-clinton-matt-lauer-496783?rm=eu
Clinton asked to address recent wikilinks
Clinton – ‘It was about president Lincoln, after watching the film about him. I was making the point that it is hard sometimes to get the congress to do what you want them to do.’
Clinton mirroring the official US Government claims that Russia has been hacking information and trying to influence the US Presidential Election
Clinton – ‘Russian’s hack information, we don’t even know if it is accurate information and then put it out’
Trump – ‘I don’t know Putin but I think it would be great if we got along with Russia, I think we should fight ISIS together’
Trump claiming the audits are stopping his release of his Tax returns, clearly missed this statement –http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/onpolitics/2016/02/26/donald-trump-internal-revenue-service-audits/80996086/
Trump – ‘She’s been there for 30 years, she never will change’
Trump has consistently said why didn’t Clinton change x when she was a senator. 1 Senator out of 100 in the Senate. Which is one of the Houses in Congress. Which is one branch of the US Government…
Trump claiming that he will decrease taxes on the middle class. This is untrue, his tax plan would cut taxes for the wealthy and increase them on the middle class. Many different analyses have shown this: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2016/09/24/a-new-study-says-trump-would-raise-taxes-for-millions-trumps-campaign-insists-he-wont/
Another analysis that shows the same http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2016/sep/27/hillary-clinton/hillary-clinton-correctly-cites-outside-analyses-t/
Again Donald, 1 Senator out of 100 in the Senate. Which is one of the Houses in Congress. Which is one branch of the US Government…
Trump – ‘She doesn’t do anything about anything but talk’
Trump keeps referencing Bernie Sanders ‘Bad judgement’ remark
I’m gonna post this one last time… 1 Senator out of 100 in the Senate. Which is one of the Houses in Congress. Which is one branch of the US Government…
Hillary – ‘I will be the president that gets it done’
Hillary – ‘8 million kids have health insurance because of her work, hundreds of thousands kids have the chance to be adopted now. After 9/11 help rebuild work. Advocating for womens right around the world’
Trump again blaming the Obama administration for leaving Iraq. This is incredibly reductive, he completely ignores that it was a deal signed by the Bush administration to leave Iraq by 2012: http://www.state.gov/documents/organization/122074.pdf
Hillary – ‘For 30 years I’ve produced results’
Hillary – ‘Russia hasn’t paid any attention to ISIS they are interested in keeping Assad in power in Syria’
Hillary – ‘I’ve stood up to Russia, I’ve taken on Putin and others and I will do that as president’
Trump constantly interchanges Obama with Clinton in arguments. He knows his audience, Anti-Obama republicans
“You don’t know who the rebels are” – Trump
Trump – ‘I don’t like Assad at all but Assad is killing ISIS, Russia is killing ISIS and Iran is killing ISIS’ This is his response to a question about Syrian humanitarian aid plans.
Trump praises Russia and Assad for killing ISIS, they are also fighting rebels in the country. He disagrees with his running mate over how to handle ISIS. Trump wants to go after them and kill them all
You don’t even know who ISIS are Trump
“Iraq is us, with our leadership” – Trump claiming a puppet government in Iraq?
“I would not use American Ground Forces in Syria.” – Clinton
Trump continues to interrupt Hillary, making snide remarks.
“I will not use American Ground Troops in Syria.” – Clinton
Hillary Clinton is calling for investigations into Russia for war crimes however, America is in no position to call for any investigations into war crimes. Many war crimes committed in Iraq and Afghanistan were covered up, as well as the torture campaign at Guantanamo Bay. The USA could also easily be investigated. https://theintercept.com/drone-papers/ https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2015/jun/02/cia-sexual-abuse-torture-majid-khan-guantanamo-bay https://www.chelseamanning.org/news/what-did-wikileaks-reveal
Trump gaining claiming unfair treatment from the moderators
“Of course, she calls our people deplorables” and I call Mexicans rapists and criminals and say African-Americans live in hell
Trump blames Clinton for everything that Obama and Bill and Congress has ever done for the last 30 years. Does he realise they are not the same people?
Trump disagreed with his running mate to praise the dictator who's trying to interfere with our election.
This is so dangerous.

https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/785301685157695492 “Go to her website, her plan to fight ISIS is right there. SHE IS HELPING THE ENEMY”
Hillary – ‘I want to make sure every American feels like they have a place here’
Hillary – ‘If you don’t vote for me, I still want to be your president’
Trump correct that Hillary Clinton called TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnership) the ‘Gold-Standard’ http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2015/oct/13/hillary-clinton/what-hillary-clinton-really-said-about-tpp-and-gol/
Trump – ‘Believe me, she has tremendous hatred in her heart’

Trump looking to appoint a judge in the mould of Scalia. One of the most controversial and disliked Supreme Court Justices in American History

Trump has been one of the first candidates to make money from running for president
Clinton – “I respect the 2nd amendment but I believe in better back ground checks and closing the loop holes”
‘I don’t know Putin … I know nothing about Russia’
Last November, Trump claimed in a debate that he “got to know [Putin] very well because we were both on 60 Minutes”. They appeared in separate, pre-taped segments of the current affairs show and were not on set together.
“For the first time we are energy independent” – Clinton
Could you name one positive thing you respect in one another? Interesting
Asked to name one positive thing they respect in one another
Hillary – ‘I respect his children, his children are incredibly able and devoted and that says a lot about Donald’
Clinton – “I respect his children, they are able and devoted.”
Clinton – One of the most consequential elections we’ve ever had
Trump – “She doesn’t quit. She doesn’t give up. I respect that. She is a fighter.”
Trump – ‘She doesn’t quit, she doesn’t give up. I respect that. She’s a fighter, I disagree with much of what she is fighting for.’
Clinton and Trump shake hands and that is the end of the debate. See you on the 19th October for the final Presidential Debate
