People Shouldn’t Vote For Hillary Because Of Gender

In the past few days, a video and an article appeared criticising women who would vote for Hillary Cilnton just because she’s a woman, I say that has nothing to do with it.

As Susan Sarandon put it in a video that now has over 400,000 views on YouTube, ‘I don’t vote with my vagina’. My instant reaction was what century are we in? There are arguably many reasons you could vote for Hillary, her experience in government, her progressive stance on reproductive rights, immigration, health care and workers’ rights, the fact that she’s a woman has nothing to do with it.

If she was a man, no man would say ‘I don’t vote with my testicles’, but once again Hillary’s lack of a Y chromosome holds her back in this election.

An article by LaSha in the Guardian also argued:

It would seem only natural, then, that Hillary Clinton would be the logical choice for me in this year’s election. After all, she is a woman – as I am.

How is that natural?

Both the video and the article bring up good reasons not to vote for Hillary, her record is not perfect, she has changed her mind about various topics such as voting against gay marriage and now supporting it for instance. Her campaign is allegedly funded by fossil fuel companies, she backed the overthrow of the president of Honduras as the article points out. But even mentioning the fact that she is a woman shows how far we still have to go to achieve equality.

The way Hillary has been treated this election proves how unequal the sexes are, and how necessary it is to have more women in politics. It should be considered normal for a woman to run for the presidency, rather than some strange occurrence which provokes women to vote for her not for the best candidate, but the same sex.
