Winchester School of Art Degree Show

Another year rushes by leaving behind an evident trail of busy students. The once noisy work studios were blissfully quiet as I explored this year’s end of year degree exhibition.

Starting off in the WSA art gallery were a range of photography and graphic print pieces. The walls of the downstairs foyer were covered in exciting print work which continued upstairs in the level 2 graphics studio. Luring you up the stairs were pieces of brightly coloured knit work wrapped around banisters. This proceeded along the walls of the foyer. The level 1 fashion and textiles studio was home to garments and the WSA fashion show being streamed onto the back wall. The exhibition continued over in the east side building showing off the fine art, fashion marketing and sculpture work.

Each room had a relaxed atmosphere. The sheer quality of the work did the talking. The space available to exhibit in was used to its full advantage showing that the placement of each piece had been carefully considered in a contemporary style. Garments and fabric samples hung from the ceiling allowing them to gently twist showing off all view points and letting the light infuse the different colours and textures.
This exhibition provided the students with the perfect opportunity to showcase their final years work and also get their name out into the public with lookbooks and business cards available to take away.

I think more could have been done in the way of posters and signs to create awareness of the exhibition to the general public. This also could have given the students further opportunity to sell their work or provide contact details for commissioned work. The show definitely showed off the range of talented students we have at Winchester school of art.

In the next 2 weeks, the degree shows for both the Graphic Arts and Fine Art courses open in London providing a great opportunity for the students to showcase their work to a bigger audience.

Check out the events’ websites for more information and be sure not to miss it as it won’t disappoint!
