Christmas in Lapland

If you love tinsel, presents and everything Christmassy, where better to visit than the ‘official home of Santa Claus’? That place would be Rovaniemi in Lapland, Finland.

Living in Finland, I was lucky enough to visit Lapland one year. The region offers the perfect setting for Christmas; its cold, snowy, and the Finnish landscape of beautiful unspoilt forests where elk and reindeer bob in and out of view is breathtaking.

The Santa Claus Village is definitely worth a visit; I was expecting tacky, but it’s actually quite magical. Skiing is also an option, although Finland is quite flat with cross-country skiing being the most popular sport.

Not only that, but being past the Arctic Circle, you can – if your lucky – see the incredible once-in-a-lifetime Northern Lights. The beautiful natural colours and lights given off are truly mesmerising.

You might, however, just spend your trip trying out all the different kinds of transport; I got pulled along by some manic reindeer, tried some mushing (sled dogs), screamed on a 60mph snowmobile and got stuck in a snow drift.

Husky dogs, snow and the Northern Lights; Lapland really is a winter wonderland.
