People in and around Southampton have had brown water coming out of their taps.
Southern Water says engineers are working to fix the problem, and that the brown water is safe to drink.
It is thought to be caused by rust collecting inside a water main or service pipe. According to Southern Water rust can be dislodged by disturbances to the pipe, such as a burst main or rapid changes to the direction or speed of water flow.
However, the Southern Water website states;
“This is due to a loss of power at our Testwood Water Supply Works in Hampshire. The site is now fully operational”.
Local residents have claimed that the water tastes sandy, a bit gritty and sand can be seen at the bottom of the glass.
Southern Water advised customers affected by the problem to visit www.southernwater.co.uk or contact them via Facebook or Twitter @SouthernWater, and will provide updates as soon as they are available.
