George Osborne has resigned from government. Philip Hammond has now been appointed as the new Chancellor of the Exchequer.
A statement from No.10 has said
“The Queen has been pleased to approve the appointment of Rt Hon Philip Hammond MP as Chancellor of the Exchequer. The Rt Hon George Osborne MP has resigned from Government.”
Philip Hammond was previously foreign secretary. Hammond also served as Transport Secretary under David Cameron.
Whilst George Osborne had previously been expected to be re-appointed as Foreign Secretary, Boris Johnson has now been appointed in this role.
The new appointment of Philip Hammond is one of the first to be appointed into Theresa May’s cabinet. He has been shortly followed by Amber Rudd who is the new Home Secretary.
Michael Fallon and David Davis have also arrived at Downing Street. Michael Fallon is to remain Defence Secretary. David Davis has been appointed as Brexit Secretary.
Liam Fox will lead the new international trade department.
