Transfer Deadline Day Live

Keep your eye on this page for all the latest updates on what promises to be a record breaking transfer deadline day.

31/08/16 12:00pm: Hello and welcome to Transfer Deadline Day here on at the Wessex Scene. In what promises to be a hectic last eleven hours of the 2016 summer transfer window. Already, clubs around the world are scrambling to thrash out the final few deals of the window.

12:03pm: In a round up of major news from this morning, we begin with Chelsea who look close to signing Fiorentina left-back Marcos Alonso for around £20m. The attacking twenty-five year old full back is comfortable at both left-back and left-midfield, although he can also be deployed in the centre of defence. Chelsea are also being heavily linked with David Luiz making a sensational return to the club he left two summers ago.

12:05pm: DONE DEAL! Torino announce the loan of England No.1 goalkeeper Joe Hart for the season. Hart has been ostracised at Manchester City since Pep Guardiola took charge, and the recent signing of Claudio Bravo has pushed Hart further down the pecking order to third choice.

12:07pm: To Stoke City now, who look set to announce Wilfred Bony also on loan from Manchester City. The Ivorian striker dominated when at Swansea, but has found game-time limited at City, and looks set to join the Potters on loan, presumably ending their interest in West Bromwich Albion’s Saido Berahino. Bony is the only player who will be joining Stoke on loan, with a deal also agreed to sign Bruno Martins Indi from Porto on loan, with an option to buy for £8.5m at the end.

12:11pm: A big signing appears to be joining the Premier League champions, as Islam Slimani has been given permission to take a medical ahead of joining the Foxes. The fee being quoted is around £27m. Leicester have already lost one player today, with bit-part central midfielder Gokhan Inler joining Besikitas today for around £7m.

12:14pm: To North London now, and a potential outgoing for Arsenal. Young winger Serge Gnabry appears to be on his way out the club, with Werder Bremen close to agreeing a deal to sign the German youth international today. Jack Wilshere, once hailed as the saviour of English fooball is set to go on loan, with Bournemouth and Crystal Palace the front-runners for his signature for the season, although don’t rule out a late swoop from Roma.

12:16pm: For Spurs fans, the day could be a bit more frustrating. Although they appear to have finally signed Georges-Kevin N’Koudou from Marseille, they won’t be getting Isco on loan. They also have dropped interest in Wilfred Zaha over disagreements over the price, and now Moussa Sissoko, who earlier looked to be joining the Lilywhites appears to be unlikely, with Spurs and Newcastle being a long way apart on the fee.

12:19pm: DONE DEAL! Stoke sign Lee Grant on loan from Derby County.

12:24pm: It’s not just English clubs who are short on time from transfers, with the majority of windows in Europe also closing at various points today. In Italy, most clubs are finished with business, although the long-running soap-opera-esque saga of Maksimovic to Napoli from Torino is still to be confirmed. Also, Juventus are hoping to do some late business by signing Chelsea’s Juan Cuadrado on loan, and also picking up Axel Witsel from Zenit.

12:32pm: From Italy, to Germany and FC Ingolstadt announcing the signing of Marcel Tisserand from Monaco. The player had previously been linked with Arsenal and err… Espanyol. An odd transfer. Still, plenty of time before the early 5pm deadline for the Bundesliga clubs.

12:34pm: Back to Chelsea, and two interesting lines developing this hour. Valencia defender Aymen Abdennour, who was linked with the Blues before joining Valencia appears to be in discussions with Chelsea over a season-long loan deal, presumably as the much-needed defensive cover. Also, Gianluca Di Marzio is claiming AC Milan now want Cesc Fabregas on a season-long loan, after the Spaniard allegedly rejected a move to city rivals Inter Milan. Potentially ones to watch in the coming hours.

12:39pm: Loans appear to be the order of the day with Sevilla now close to signing Samir Nasri on loan from Manchester City. Their official statement on the deal reads as follows: “We’re finalising the transfer of Nasri. We’re negotiating with the player and Man City & trying to close the deal.” A reminder that the Spanish window closes one hour later than the English window, at Midnight.

12:43pm: Presumably Valencia’s replacement for Abdennour if they do loan him out, Elaqium Mangala appears close to joining them from Manchester City on… you guessed it, a loan deal for the season. He is currently having a medical with the club.

12:51pm: Middlesborough have started the season well in the Premier League, and it looks like it could be a case of one-in-one-out at the Riverside. Tricky winger Albert Adomah appears set to join Aston Villa, while Villa’s own tricky winger Adama Traore looks set to join the Borough. The former is having a medical right now.

12:55pm: DONE DEAL! Lucas Jutkiewicz has joined Birmingham on loan from Burnley.

12:59pm: DONE DEAL! The man with arguably the craziest hair in world football- at least in Fifa 12 is on the move again. Vagner Love has left Monaco to join Alanyaspor today, having previously played in China, Russia and France. Welliton and Love up-front in Ultimate Team, those were the days.

13:02pm: DONE DEAL! Stoke City have signed Wilfred Bony on a season long loan from Manchester City.

13:03pm: DONE DEAL! Another quick one from Germany- Shani Tarashaj has gone on loan to Eintracht Frankfurt from Everton. He has previously been on loan in Switzerland.

13:08pm: Two medicals to report now. Jeff Hendrick is having a medical at Burnley after they agreed a fee with Derby County. Also, Everton have agreed a deal with Sheffield United for highly-rated young striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin and he is currently undergoing his medical.

13:18pm: West Bromwich Albion have agreed a fee with Watford for right-back Alan Nyom.

13:29pm: Three more lines as the new information briefly slows down. Defensive midfielder Didier N’Dong is close to joining Sunderland for a club record fee of £20m from French club Lorient. The last piece of news right now is from Yann M’Vila also being close to retuining to the Black Cats this season. Finally, perenial Deadline Day hero Emmanuel Adebayor continues his tour of London FC as negotiations continue with Fulham over his potential signing.

13:54pm: DEVELOPING STORY. David Luiz, clown prince of Brazil appears to be on his way back to Chelsea FC for around £35m. Aymen Abdennour could also still join on loan.

14:12pm: Some first images here for Joe Hart at Torino.

14:19pm: DONE DEAL! Samir Nasri joins Sevilla on loan for the season. Another high-profile loan!

14:40pm: Roma are now apparently making significant progress with attempts to sign Jack Wilshere on loan from Arsenal. He has previously been linked to Crystal Palace and Bournemouth.

14:45pm: Brighton have rejected a sixth bid for midfielder Dale Stephens from Burnley. Will they get their man by the 11pm deadline?

15:13pm: Something of a lull with just under eight hours to go on Deadline Day. Keep with us for the latest updates and confirmed deals when they happen.

Middlesborough and Aston Villa swap Albert Adomah and Adama Traore respectively
West Brom sign Euro 2016 Welsh hero Hal Robson-Kanu and also bring in Watford’s Clinton N’Jie.Champions Leicester sign striker Islam Slimani from Sporting Lisbon for a club-record fee of £28m. Rotation midfielder Gokhan Inler joins Besikitas.
Nice sign Mario Balotelli (why Nice, why?)
Maksimovic swaps Turin for Naples and Napoli, and Juventus get Cuadrado, but can’t push Witsel over the line.

avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 201611:26 pm
Well, what a Deadline Day. Here is the big news.
Loans loans loans: Hart to Torino, Wilshere to Bournemouth, Nasri to Sevilla, Mangala to Valencia, Denayer to Sunderland, Bony to Stoke. Markovic to Sporting Lisbon.
Arsenal sell starlet Serge Gnabry to Werder Bremen.

avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 201611:13 pm

This year’s shock deal sees a real fan favourite return to his former club…

avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 201611:10 pm

Sunderland have submitted a deal sheet to the Premier League trying to push through a deal for a mystery goalkeeper.

avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 201611:02 pm

Moussa Sissoko joins Spurs on a five year deal for a fee of £30m. A potentially very expensive gamble, or shrewd business from MoPo?

avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 201611:01 pm

Joselu of Stoke City has joined RC Deportivo on a season-long loan. Presumably pushed out by Bony?

avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 201611:01 pm
Gonna round up all the late confirmations quickly
avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 201611:00 pm

avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 201610:58 pm

Chris Martin has joined Fulham from Derby County for £5m. A powerful partner for big Matt Smith.

avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 201610:52 pm

avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 201610:47 pm

Hull City have signed Dieumerci Mbokani on loan from Dynamo Kiev. He played for Norwich in the Premier League last year.

avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 201610:42 pm

Hang on, didn’t Sissoko once say he wanted to join Arsenal and was desperate to join them earlier this summer? Those quotes could come back to haunt him…

avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 201610:35 pm

Juventus won’t be signing Axel Witsel, the deal has fallen through. The Belgian midfielder will stay at Zenit St. Petersburg until January, but he may join The Old Lady in January.

avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 201610:33 pm

Another major loan deal today, as Lazar Markovic joins Sporting Lisbon on a season long loan from Liverpool. An ex-Benfica player, wonder what kind of reception he will get?

avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 201610:32 pm

Another Chelsea loan player confirmed. Christian Atsu joins Newcastle United for the season on loan, with a view to a permanent deal. Replacement for Sissoko?

avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 201610:28 pm

Everton have withdrawn all interest in Moussa Sissoko. Has Poch finally got his man?

avatar Tom Morgan August 31, 201610:24 pm

Fair point that, Robert. Would be a shocker, and probably dent Koeman’s top-four ambitions quite significantly.

avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 201610:23 pm

Wonder what Everton fans will make of today? Linked with Bony, Brahimi, Gabbiadini and Sissoko. Could end up with Enner Valencia on loan.

avatar Tom Morgan August 31, 201610:22 pm

Bloody Moussa Sissoko, keeping me late at work. I’m still here at Guardian Towers, waiting for the man to make up his mind. Danny Levy can shoulder some blame for this – he needs to have a long hard look at himself. Bidding £30m at 10pm?

I have kids to feed, Daniel.
avatar Tom Morgan August 31, 201610:09 pm

Development on the Sissoko case. In the last few minutes, Tottenham have matched Everton’s £30m for the Frenchman.

avatar Tom Morgan August 31, 201610:07 pm

Lucas Piazon, Chelsea’s forgotten Brazilian midfielder, has gone out on loan to Fulham.
avatar Tom Morgan August 31, 201610:05 pm

Jason Denayer has gone out on loan to Sunderland from Manchester City.
avatar Tom Morgan August 31, 201610:01 pm

In other news, Maksimovic has finally put pen to paper on a contract with Napoli. They’ve managed to sign him and keep hold of Koulibaly.

Rumour also has us believe that Zenit have stalled on Axel Witsel’s pending move to Juventus, as they couldn’t find a replacement.
avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 201610:00 pm

avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 20169:50 pm

Dominic Calvert-Lewin, a young star at Sheffield United has today joined Everton for an undisclosed fee, around £1m. He signs a four year contract.

avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 20169:49 pm

Hal-Robson Kanu has signed a three year deal at West Bromwich Albion on a free transfer. A reward for his Euro 2016 heroics, but can he make the step up?

avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 20169:47 pm

Marvin Johnson of Motherwell, who handed in a transfer request several days ago has joined Oxford United tonight on a three year deal. The fee is undisclosed, but we understand it is a club record.

avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 20169:41 pm

Adam Reach joins Sheffield Wednesday for £5m from Middlesborough. Surprised at that, he played so well last year for the Riversiders.

avatar Tom Morgan August 31, 20169:39 pm

Aiden McGeady joins Preston on loan. Could have been a sensational player, but has sought refuge in the Championship.
avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 20169:34 pm

Jack Wilshere has joined Bournemouth on loan for the season. What a signing for the Cherries.

avatar Tom Morgan August 31, 20169:27 pm

Impressive amassing of firepower from Leicester – Vardy, Mahrez, Musa, Slimani, Okazaki, Gray. Not bad for a club who were planning promotion to the top flight three years ago.

avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 20169:15 pm

Leicester City have signed Islam Slimani from Sporting Lisbon for around £32m. Superb signing for the English Champions.

avatar Tom Morgan August 31, 20169:10 pm

In other news, Mustafi has gone down injured in a friendly against Finland.

He’s an Arsenal player already.
avatar Tom Morgan August 31, 20169:06 pm

Islam Slimani is all but done to Leicester. Sporting’s official Twitter have said their goodbyes too.

avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 20169:03 pm

James Weir has now joined Hull from Manchester United for an undisclosed fee.

avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 20168:54 pm

David Luiz has apparently passed his medical. A real character returning to SW6.

avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 20168:53 pm

James McCarthy appears to be on the move somewhere tonight, with a three-way tussle between Sunderland, West Brom and Crystal Palace emerging for this deal.

avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 20168:48 pm

West Ham have signed full-back Alvaro Arbeloa on a free transfer, on a one-year contract. Decent cover in the squad, but not really a world-beater.

avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 20168:40 pm

Think that is a bit harsh on Mané, has started the season well and offers something a bit different for Klopp’s team. Few naughty whispers this evening that Sturridge’s agent offered the player to Arsenal, now that would have been a shock.

avatar Tom Morgan August 31, 20168:35 pm

For all this moaning about inflated transfer fees, the top ten signings of the summer really haven’t been that exorbitant [aside from Pogba].

British clubs have largely refused the absurdly inflated cross-continent fees that they’ve been quoted. Admittedly some of the players who command £30m are questionable [Mane and Bolasie, I’m looking at you] but it hasn’t quite been as bad as some of the media would have you believe. Has it?
avatar Tom Morgan August 31, 20168:30 pm

Can confirm Mario Balotelli has signed for Nice for free. One year contract. Cost Liverpool £16m two years ago.

That’s depreciation for you.
avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 20168:19 pm
West Brom have signed Allan Nyom from Watford for around £4m. Decent player in my eyes, had a solid season last year.
avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 20168:10 pm

West Brom are now in negotiations to sign James McCarthy from Everton on a season-long loan deal. Another loan!

avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 20168:08 pm

Sky Sources are now saying Sissoko is on his way to Everton for a medical after a £30m fee has been agreed. Gonna be a long one. Everton are also close to signing West Ham’s Ecuadorian striker Enner Valencia on a season long loan.

avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 20168:03 pm
Mario Balotelli has apparently left Liverpool to join Nice on a free transfer.
avatar Tom Morgan August 31, 20167:58 pm

And so the Sissoko drama goes on – according to several reputable sources, Everton are struggling to push the deal through and Spurs have muscled their way back to the front of the queue.

avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 20167:56 pm

Some interesting details emerging regarding the sensational David Luiz transfer back to Chelsea…

avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 20167:52 pm

Another Manchester City player out on loan? Sources suggest young Belgian centre-back Jason Denayer has been given Pep Guardiola’s blessing to go out on loan with Sunderland thrashing out a late deal for him.

avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 20167:48 pm

The BBC understand that Moussa Sissoko is in London and Spurs are currently ahead of Everton in the race to sign him. Pochettino is reportedly keen and confident of completing the deal.

avatar Tom Morgan August 31, 20167:38 pm

Still a few deals bubbling under. Let’s recap what we’ve seen so far:

Chelsea have completed the double signing of David Luiz and Marcos Alonso for an estimated £55m.

Burnley smashed their transfer record to secure Jeff Hendrick.

Sunderland secured the signature of midfielder Didier Ndong from Lorient.

Tottenham announced the signing of 20-year-old winger Georges-Kevin Nkoudou, along with loan signing Pau Lopez of Espanyol.

Manchester City have shipped out a few big names, including loan deals for Samir Nasri, Eliaquim Mangala and Wilfried Bony.

Everton are expected to announce the signing of 27-year-old Moussa Sissoko from Newcastle.

Leicester are also in advanced talks to wrap up a sensational double deal for Sporting duo Islam Slimani and Adrien Silva.

avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 20167:37 pm

Spurs have made a second signing, signing Pau Lopez on a season-long loan deal from Espanyol with a view to a permanent transfer. A long-term Lloris replacement?

avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 20167:35 pm

Mike Phelan continues to plunder Manchester United for lesser-known potential gems. U21 captain James Weir is currently undergoing a medical at Hull City this evening. Hull have been active, but not as much as you’d expect for a club with 13 fit players.

avatar Tom Morgan August 31, 20167:29 pm

Apparently Steven Naismith’s touted move to Sunderland has fallen through as the club failed to agree personal terms with the striker.

avatar Tom Morgan August 31, 20167:24 pm

What are the odds on Jack Wilshere failing his medical? Pretty reasonable, I’d expect.

avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 20167:22 pm

An interesting new bio for someone at Paris, France…

avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 20167:19 pm

Fabinho would be a hehe Fab signing for them… oh dear Rob.
In other news, Chelsea’s loan army increases in size, with Jake Clarke-Salter and Charlie Colkett both joining League One outfit Bristol Rovers on loan. Colkett is a very good young passer for the Pirates, they have a real gem on their hands.

avatar Tom Morgan August 31, 20167:18 pm

According to Lyall Thomas of Sky Sports, Spurs are still busy working to bring in another new face before the window slams shut in around 3 and a half hours time.

avatar Tom Morgan August 31, 20167:14 pm

Being told that Balotelli is signing a contract with Nice as we speak.

avatar Tom Morgan August 31, 20167:04 pm

Speaking of shocks Robert…

Manchester United are apparently readying a bid for Fabinho, Monaco’s talented 22-year-old full back. He’s been linked with Mourinho’s team consistently through this window, and it’d be a real turn-up if United clinched this with four hours to go.
avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 20167:02 pm
Another brief lull in deals- with just under four hours left, the clock is ticking. Will we still get a major shock out of nothing? Probably not… but you never know!
avatar Tom Morgan August 31, 20167:00 pm

In other news, Jack Wilshere’s loan move to Bournemouth is on the verge of completion. The player has passed a medical and it’ll be fascinating to see how Eddie Howe uses him in the coming months.

Sparingly, one hopes, on account of his injury record.
avatar Tom Morgan August 31, 20166:38 pm

Albeit, personal terms and a medical are yet to be agreed. That seems like a formality though, with Luiz in London and reported as keen to return to Chelsea.

avatar Tom Morgan August 31, 20166:35 pm
It’s done. Today’s most exciting and convoluted story has come to a close, as David Luiz is announced as a Chelsea player.
avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 20166:34 pm

David Luiz is set to return to Chelsea from Paris Saint Germain. The move is subject to the player agreeing terms and passing a medical- relative formality.

avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 20166:29 pm

As part of the deal below, Marseille have also announced the signing of Clinton N’Jie on loan from Spurs for the season. Presumably the hope is he will fill the Batshuayi-size gap created at L’OM.

avatar Tom Morgan August 31, 20166:18 pm

After 42 days of messing around, Tottenham have finally agreed terms with Georges Kevin Nkoudou from Marseille. The 21-year-old winger has been linked with the London club for weeks, and the two clubs have finally thrashed out a deal. Even the Tottenham Twitter see the funny side…

avatar Tom Morgan August 31, 20166:14 pm

Sky Sports reporting that Islam Slimani has passed a medical ahead of a move to Leicester City.

The distance that club has come in 12 months in astonishing.

avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 20166:10 pm

Forever on loan English defender Andre Wisdom is back out on loan. Shock. This time, he joins Red Bull Salzburg from Liverpool for the season.

avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 20166:07 pm

An update on the Cuadrado deal- it appears to actually be a loan for three seasons with Chelsea getting £5m per season and option to buy outright for £25m at any point.

avatar Tom Morgan August 31, 20166:06 pm

Everton seem to have been linked with every attacking midfielder under the sun in the past 24 hours, but another rumour has just bit the dust. Yacine Brahimi will not be moving to Goodison Park, according to Portugese journalist Tiago Costa.

avatar Tom Morgan August 31, 20166:03 pm

Much maligned striker Rickie Lambert could be on the move again, as West Brom are looking to offload him to Cardiff City according to the BBC.

avatar Tom Morgan August 31, 20166:02 pm

Also being told Tottenham never made a bid for Schalke playmaker Max Meyer. Initial interest, but no approach made.

avatar Tom Morgan August 31, 20165:50 pm

It may not come as a surprise, but I am being told David Luiz to Chelsea is 100% done.

avatar Tom Morgan August 31, 20165:48 pm

After that crazy hour and a bit, it’s died down a little. David Luiz is understood to be having a medical at Stamford Bridge around 6pm GMT, whilst Jack Wilshere has reportedly settled on Bournemouth as his destination for a loan spell away from Arsenal. There are potential moves afoot for Leicester, Everton and Tottenham whilst Burnley have broken their transfer record to sign Irish midfielder Jeff Hendrick.

Manchester City’s squad purge is complete with the departures of Joe Hart, Samir Nasri, Eliaquim Mangala and Wilfried Bony all complete. It’s been a quiet day for Manchester United and Arsenal, the latter of whom have wrapped up deals for Lucas Perez and Shkodran Mustafi in the past couple of days.
Last-minute transfer deals are known to often drag on into the evening, so we’re all set for an exciting few hours!
avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 20165:31 pm

More on Marcos Alonso, who is expected to wear the No. 3 shirt at Chelsea, which was of course famously worn by Ashley Cole. You can see the first images of Alonso in a Chelsea shirt at this link:

avatar Tom Morgan August 31, 20165:25 pm

Am hearing that Everton’s interest in Manolo Gabbiadini, the versatile forward from Napoli, is over.

Does that open the door further to a certain enigmatic Frenchman?
avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 20165:25 pm

QPR continue the random name signings coming by signing Pavel Wszolek from Hellas Verona. Know absolutely nothing about the guy to be honest.

avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 20165:22 pm

Eunan O’Kane joins Leeds from Bournemouth for an undisclosed fee. Hasn’t really progressed since his big money move from Torquay several years ago.

avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 20165:21 pm

Charlie Mulgrew, once of Celtic has signed for Blackburn Rovers. Being bottom of the league this early in the season, they have moved to reinforce their clearly leaky defence.

avatar Tom Morgan August 31, 20165:17 pm

The Guardian are reporting that Newcastle’s want-away midfielder Moussa Sissoko is on his way to Everton.

After all their posturing, the Toffies haven’t been as active in the market as their new financial clout suggested they would be, so the capture of French international Sissoko would be a shrewd move to strengthen their midfield.
avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 20165:14 pm

Another new name in for Brentford who sign Sulley Kaikai on loan for the season from Crystal Palace. Alan Pardew did earlier confirm he expected several youngsters to be on the move this season, and Kaikai will spend it at Griffin Park.

avatar Tom Morgan August 31, 20165:11 pm

More on Marcos Alonso, who completed his transfer to Chelsea this afternoon. The Spanish defender said: ‘I’m very happy. It’s a step up in my career and I think this is the perfect place for me to continue developing. It’s time for me to win some titles.

‘It was an easy decision for me to make when I heard the club were interested in signing me. My family and close friends know Chelsea is the club I have dreamed about playing for so I’m really excited about the challenge and I’m looking forward to working with my new team-mates.’

avatar Tom Morgan August 31, 20165:06 pm

It was reported that Chelsea had a £25m bid for Inter Milan midfielder Marcelo Brozovic accepted, but the move fell through. are reporting that the Croatian midfielder refused the offer and Chelsea’s personal terms, and has now signed a new contract with Inter.

avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 20165:06 pm
Rangers have signed Phillipe Senderos, once of Arsenal, Fulham and Crystal Palace on a free transfer. He must be ancient now!
avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 20165:05 pm

Everton, despite flatly denying interest in Moussa Sissoko earlier, have now u-turned and appear to be in discussions with Newcastle about signing the talented, if not erratic Frenchman.

The only stumbling block once again could be the price, or will Spurs swoop in and tie up a deal that once looked dead and buried?
avatar Tom Morgan August 31, 20165:04 pm

This is truly the year of the loan. Clubs, averse to risk-taking after so much bad press, are hedging their bets on an increasingly frequent basis.

avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 20165:03 pm

Once again, Pogba is on the move this window. Mathias Pogba has left Partick Thistle by mutual consent. Maybe he is going to collaborate on a video with Stormzy to announce this?

avatar Tom Morgan August 31, 20165:02 pm

Eliaquim Mangala [the £40m player] has joined Valencia on a season long loan.
avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 20165:02 pm

Phillip Wollscheid, who I thought had a great season last year joins Wolfsburg on loan from Stoke. Unsurprising considering the former just lost Dante and the latter just gained Martins Indi, but a good signing for the German giants.

avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 20164:59 pm

Kamil Grosicki, who impressed during the Euros this summer could also be on his way to England. Burnley could be about to splash the cash yet again with a fee of around £6.5m reportedly agreed with Grosicki’s club Stade Rennais.

avatar Tom Morgan August 31, 20164:59 pm

All this activity, it does beg the question as to why teams don’t get the work done earlier. Some strange rumours wafting out of the transfer kitty now.

avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 20164:56 pm

Jack Wilshere is set to snub interest from Roma, AC Milan and Crystal Palace and sign for Bournemouth on loan. A good signing for Bournemouth General Hospital?

avatar Tom Morgan August 31, 20164:53 pm

Fiorentina have confirmed the sale of full-back Marcos Alonso to Chelsea.
avatar Robert Pratley August 31, 20164:51 pm

All eyes to Cobham at 6pm, as sources indicate David Luiz will have a medical at 6pm ahead of his sensational return. Wonder if he will better his last medical scores?

Am shocked at how cheap that Martins Indi fee is! On another note, Sheffield Wednesday have agreed a fee for Middlesborough winger Adam Reach and the player will now undergo a medical. Good signing for Wednesday in my opinion, played very well last year when given the chance.

Stoke City have signed Dutch defender Bruno Martins Indl on a season-long loan with a view to a permanent deal.
IMHO, that’s a steal. He looked Class A at the World Cup in 2014.

A strange one this. Wolves have signed Ivan Cavaleiro from Monaco. Was a Football Manager wonderkid a few years ago, definitely constitutes a shock deal!

Wales had a cracking European Championships and it appears one of the stars of the show is on his way to the Premier League. Several media outlets, including the one I’m currently typing from, are reporting that Hal Robson Kanu is on his way for a medical at West Brom.

He’s a free agent after leaving Reading this summer. At 27, he might well still have his best years ahead of him.

According to ‘Sky Sources’ [and who has ever doubted them before], Bournemouth remain the favourites to land Jack Wilshere on loan. AC Milan have enquired about the England international’s availability, but Bournemouth are leading the chase. Ahead of AC Milan.

That’s the same AC Milan who have welcomed the likes of Ronaldinho, Paulo Maldini, Kaka and David Beckham through their doors.

Bournemouth, well 20-year-old Jordan Ibe is their record signing.

Need I say more?

David Luiz looks set to return to Chelsea, but where, oh, where is Marco Alonso? Surely Chelsea will be announcing him soon?

avatar Tom Morgan August 31, 20163:59 pm

The impact of the new Premier League TV deal is clear. Inflated transfer prices, convoluted negotiations, meddling agents and twelve clubs bravely stepping out and breaking their respective transfer budgets.

We live in mad times.

In what can only be described as a truly remarkable turn of events, the Guardian’s Dominic Fifield has said on Twitter: “David Luiz back to Chelsea is clearly going to happen.”

Meanwhile, the Independent are running a story saying that a fee has been agreed between the two clubs.

Didier Ndong has signed for Sunderland for £13.6 million [decent price in this market]. Upon arrival, the 22-year-old midfielder said: “It will be an honour to wear the Sunderland shirt and I will wear it with a true understanding of what it means.”

More to come.

More Chelsea related news, although it’s a departure on this occasion. We’re expecting the announcement of Juan Cuadrado’s move to Italian champions Juventus imminently. Both clubs have been haggling over the exact details of the agreement but the Colombian is now expected to return to Turin, initially on loan with a view to making the deal permanent next summer.

Sky’s Kaveh Solhekol says Luiz wants to come back to Chelsea. This all seemed a little distant 24 hours ago, especially in light of the fact that Chelsea were firmly rebuffed when they asked PSG about fellow Brazilian Marquinhos. The wheels are firmly in motion though – it’s now a race against the clock.
avatar Tom Morgan August 31, 20163:17 pm

Just heard that Yann M’Vila is to join Sunderland. David Moyes has made no secret of his desire to raid the market – will this satisfy Black Cat fans?

Tom Morgan, checking in for the afternoon. Having watched Robert do a sterling job all day so far, I’m on shift at Guardian HQ in London and will be feeding as much info through to this page. To recap all the, admittedly minimal, events of the day so far:

Manchester City have loaned out Samir Nasri, Joe Hart and Wilfried Bony to Sevilla, Torino and Stoke City respectively. Eliaquim Mangala is expected to sign a loan deal with Valencia in the coming hours too.
Chelsea are in advanced talks to resign David Luiz from PSG, according to most worthwhile news sources. The 29-year-old has fallen out of favour at the Parc Des Princes and is understood to be keen on a move back to London. PSG rejected a £32million bid for the Brazilian this morning, but the clubs are prepared to meet in the middle on their respective valuations.
Staying with the Blues, Chelsea are steps away from securing the transfer of full-back Marcos Alonso from Fiorentina. The 25-year-old will sign for around £23 million.
Sunderland are close to signing £17m rated Didier Ndong, whilst Teeside rivals Newcastle will sell Moussa Sissoko to literally anyone who is willing to pay five instalments of £6m. A Wessex Scene whip-round has been considered.
Premier League champions Leicester City are close to agreeing a deal for Algerian forward Islam Slimani. The 28-year-old, who currently plies his trade at Sporting Club, is understood to be travelling to England for a medical.
Roma are leading the chase to sign out-of-sorts Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere on loan. After an injury-plagued couple of seasons, Wilshere is ready to strike out anew in the hope of rejuvenating what was a very promising career.
All in all, it’s been a slow day, but there’s a few simmering under the surface. The windows slams SHUT in eight hours – sit tight chaps.
