Union Southampton has announced a new membership system for intramural sport.
Intramural fixtures allow societies, academic groups and halls to play against each other at an informal level.
The changes mean that intramural members will no longer have to pay the cost of a full Sport and Wellbeing membership, and will instead pay a £30 fee to the union itself to cover admin and facilities hire. It is estimated that this will save £135 per student.
Concerns have been raised that the new system is unfair on those who want to play intramural and retain Sport and Wellbeing membership. The £30 cost represents an additional fee for those who already pay for a Sport and Wellbeing membership, which is required to play sport at inter-university level.
This term’s intramural fixtures start on October 15th. Teams can register for a variety of different sports through the Union Box Office until 4th October.
