As student houses are emptying for the summer break, Southampton Police have issued a crime alert. Police are currently dealing with a number of break- ins along Carlton Rd, Milton Rd, Burlington Rd, Cromwell Rd and Ordnance Rd Southampton.
With many of these incidents entry was gained as a result of insecurities such as open doors and windows. The Priority Crime Team are advising all home owners to lock windows at night, particularly on the ground floor. In addiction, securing all doors with easy access will aid the prevention of this current crime series.
Laptops are often the most valuable item owned by students and, according to Crime Team figures, are “the most stolen item to date” . As a precaution avoid leaving laptops on display and secure well if leaving the house.
Statistically, student properties are far more likely to be burgled than other residential properties in Southampton, due poor security. The Students’ Union Advice Centre advices students not to advertise absence during vacation periods as “most burglaries happen when the house is empty”.
The Priority Crime Unit are calling for any information surrounding these burglaries, as well as urging anyone to report any further suspicious incidents and have provided these contact details:
