Sam Ling Wins SUSU Presidential Race

Sam Ling was announced as SUSU President 2011/12 last night, after beating off strong competition from seven other candidates, in SUSU’s most competitive sabbatical election to date.

Last night’s other winners, forming next year’s sabbatical team, were:

Jonathon Brooks-Bartlett– VP Sports Development

Joe McLo- VP Communications

Sasha Watson- VP Academic Affairs

Shane Murphy- VP Student Engagement

Frankie Fry- VP Welfare and Communities

Simon Protheroe- VP Winchester and Sites

And two trustees:

Andreas Day- Trustee Without Portfolio

Joshua Davies- Environment and Ethics Officer

The start of results night was delayed by one hour, following technical difficulties caused by the huge number of people who tuned in. The night eventually got underway at 22:00 in front of an excited, near capacity crowd in the cube.

With 7285 votes cast, the election was SUSU’s biggest ever in terms of participation, and every position was closely fought.

The tightest contest of the night was VP Winchester and Sites which Simon Protheroe won in the final round of voting by a mere 15 votes.

The results continued until just before one o’clock, when Sam Ling survived eight rounds of voting to triumph as SUSU president. After the results were announced, all his competitors commented that he was an excellent choice for the job.

Elections night will soon be uploaded on to watch again. To read how the night unfolded click here.
